DVD Poll
Posted by bbrowniii on Friday, January 9, 2009 9:06 AM

I just completed the poll that FSM e-mailed regarding publications with DVDs.  I have to admit, I got excited by the prospect of future works having DVDs included.  It makes perfect sense, considering the widespread use of multimedia materials.

The poll got me thinking about how multimedia presents FSM an opportunity in this time of stiff competition and dwindling resources.  How about the idea of including DVDs (from time to time - maybe twice a year in a 'special edition') in the magazines, not just in larger 'book-type' publications?  I guess, as an example, I think of all those video game magazines that include discs with samples of upcoming games.  Maybe FSM could do something similar where a particular story in the mag is accompanied by a DVD (or, if that is too expensive, how about a link to a video posted on the site that subscibers could not only access, but download if we so chose)?  These could be a subscirber only benefit, or they could be offered on the newsstand copies for, I don't know, $1.00 more than cover cost?

Truth be told, I don't know a whole lot about the logisitics of this, but it seems that in this age of expanding technology, the appeal of FSM would be expanded by branching out into this type of thing.

Just an idea.  Love to hear your responses...

We're already looking into this.

Hey Kelly, thanks for the quick reply.

Here's another idea - again one you may have considered - that embraces multimedia...  How about including a disc (a regular cd rather than a dvd) of all the pics from the big shows that don't make the "Great Scale Modeling" issue.  You could fit hundreds of pics on a single disc.  I know that additional shots are available on-line, but having them on a disc would make is easier to catalog them...

I'm really glad/excited that FSM seems to be thinking outside the proverbial box in trying to encorporate multimedia into the magazine!  Glad I renewed my subscription!

I have to agree 100% with that suggestion, bbrowniii made!!! I really hope FSM thinks about including a DVD in one or two issues a year. That would be so sweet!Cool [8D]Thumbs Up [tup]

Have you thought about converting a year's worth of issues into a CD/DVD and making them available for sale? Or perhaps consolidating related articles on modeling techniques or a specific vehicle and making them available on a disk?

Hi Rob,

I believe most of Kalmbach's publications, including FSM, have considered these options.

Right now, we've decided to sell thematically connected article collections as PDFs. Obviously, it's more cost effective than producing DVDs.

Another idea to consider is digital publications. Check out www.zinio.com to see what I mean. I buy a couple of magazines this way for a fraction of the cost. It comes in a "PDF-like" format, with pages that "turn". You can zoom in, and print out single pages if you so desire. All advertising and web urls are "hot" so it's a simple matter of clicking on a link to open the manufacturers website. You can download to numerous computers if you want so you can access your library just about anywhere.

So long folks!
