model prices in review
Posted by mdllvr on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 2:09 PM

I live in a small town in utah and there are no hobby shops within a 2 hour drive so its very hard to know whats out there in the way of model or anything else. All that you show in your reviews are the models that are very expensive. very seldom do you review a model that a person that makes 9.50 an hour can buy. according to your magazine youve priced me out of the hobby. It would be noce to see some more reviews that are in a much lower price range so I can show my kids what we can afford. thanks

One doesn't need a close hobby shop to know what kits are available.  There are hundreds of kits out there that will not "price you out of the hobby".  What do you consider very expensive?  $20? $30? $40? Search any of the online retailers (as you obviously have internet access) and you can show your children lower priced kits that you can afford.

Why are you blaming FSM for the price of kits?  They have no control over what prices a kit is.

From my point of view, a person gets what they pay for. I'd rather buy one Eduard Fw 190D in a year than 2 or 3 lesser quality kits. And, in my case it takes me years to finish a model, so maybe it's a different issue. I certainly wouldn't spend $50 on a model to throw together in a weekend and put no love in it. But that's just me.

Also, the world is what it is. I don't think it has anything to do with FSM, how much kits cost. That's purely determined by the market. Good quality comes at a price. For example, Apple computers 'sticker' price are usually more expensive than crappy Windows PCs, but there have been many studies that show total cost of ownership of a Mac is less than a PC. It all depends on how you want to look at it.

A new Eduard kit comes with photo etch, high quality decals and even canopy masks - all things that you may have to buy from an aftermarket company if you're building a $10 Monogram kit. I submit that a $50 modern kit is a better value than any $10 kit you can find.

Also, there's the matter of getting a good price for a kit. I never pay full price for a kit; if you look around online you can get a good deal. That's an even more compelling argument since you say you live in a place uncontaminated by hobby shops.

If you want something, you'll find a way to get it.

I don't think he is blaming them for the price, just asking for more reviews of affordable kits.

Look for Pegasus Models. They are a new company and produce some nice entry level model kits at an affordable price. One or two of their kits have been reviewed here on FSM.

I can see where mdllvr is coming from - as someone who is on a very limited modeling budget every $$$$ has to be carefully allocated. I too have sometimes wondered why there are never reviews of things like the HobbyBoss "easy assembly" airplane kits and the like. Yes, they can be very BASIC in certain areas, but they can also be as nice and as detailed as your abilities and wallet can make them. Just a thought in case FSM is reading this.

You can't review what isn't being provided to you. If the manufacturers don't provide the kits, then one shouldn't expect a review. That said just because FSM doesn't review each and every kit available, there are places on the web that probably do. Many of the affordable kits are repops, which were originally released decades ago. Search through the FSM and other magazine archieves as well as modeling forums to find those reviews. Several sites routinely dust off an old review and run it again...such as ModelingMadness.com.

FSM does review "affordable" kits as they are provided by the mfr. Problem is many of those kits such as those from 21st Century Toys, which btw were great kits for the price, are no longer in business.

Also one can find some pretty good deals on those expensive kits if one just watches the special purchases, sales and closeouts. Sprue Brothers has a good selection of kits at reduced prices...many of those popular and expensive eventually end up being discounted or discontinued, prices slashed to clear them out.
