Tiger, I absolutely agree with you. I was one of the (biggest?) offenders of the overuse of them. Once I got a grip I now use them for an occasional laugh...like this thread. The key is to have fun with the hobby and to engage in some light banter and make new friends.

With that being said...if you don't like them then skip over the post. No harm done. Some people just need to lighten up.

By the way, this is how smileys are made:

I can't believe I'm going to say this but, "use smileys like you'd drink beer......in moderation". Wink

I do like Disastermaster's clever use of them. But a few others have overused them in a single post and it can be very hard to read. Sort of like when a member types one long paragraph with no separation of thought. Sometimes I give up and move on.

The title of this thread seems to be a bit misleading as it sounds like the OP wants to get rid of smiley's all together, but I think if most people actually read what he wrote before turning it into the atrocity that it currently is, he really just wanted a way to turn them off on his end. This thread is a very very good example of nonsense going on in the forum.

Stop cyber bullying.

FSM has lost control of the playground.  This vile pollution is spreading across the whole of their site.  Its time that they step in and reassert themselves.   Establish and enforce rules of behavior, swift and effective!.   FSM's reputation is being further diminished  with each of these bully attacks.

Stop cyber bullying.

Now that's disgraceful

(sorry, i haven't been able to post all week and I'm lagging behind)

Now why is that disgraceful?

And just to prove tigers point, my first post here was meant to be a touch of light hearted humour, but because i didn't include a smiley, it can easily be taken the wrong way.

I do agree with the original post in that sometimes they can be over used. But when i see a post loaded with the. i just skip past it. So i say keep them.

Keep them. They are the only thing to convey an emotion. Sometimes words don't tell the story.

Is there a way to shut off all those smiley faces etc or at least block out the (ab)users? Really getting annoying to try and read through what could otherwise be an interesting topic.

My brains reads this...

Is there a way to shut off all those 229 references or at least block out the (ab)users? Really getting annoying to try and read through what could otherwise be an interesting forum.

Do we need to get the opinion of a veterinarian to know that horse is dead.

...'e says e's not dead yet...

I thought the 229 infestation (of which I am indeed a part of Whistling) had mostly confined itself to "the thread", as well as an actual GB thread?

HAHA I guess not which is absoluttly amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  HEHEHEHE!!!!!
