I don't knit, but I do read articles about technology, and came across one on what I guess is the digital center of the knitting universe - Ravelry.com.

I've long thought that hobby forums of all stripes are some of the best, most robust social sites on the internet (they were social networking before there was social networking), precisely because they're based around shared passions.
Ravelry seems to have taken that idea, married it with a clean interface and useful stuff. I mean, look at this:
Look at that left sidebar. Projects. Stash. I don't see any direct applicability to these forums...
I do love these forums, but like most forums I kind of feel like it thrives in spite, not because of, the site. Incorporating some of these ideas could really boost the utility of FSM, in my opinion. Oh, and...it seems to be pretty good for attracting advertisers:
