Magazine Issues on the iPad
Posted by RESlusher on Friday, September 23, 2011 9:41 AM

Here's an idea.  Maybe it's already being done somehow and I'm just not aware of it.  If so, if someone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.  Anyways...

Since it looks like iPads and other tablet type devices aren't going away, how 'bout making issues of FSM readable on the iPad?  Maybe something like a log in with our subscription number and the account is only good as long as our subscriptions are up to date.  We also shouldn't have to pay extra for the privilige of choosing digital format or magazine format.  Your subscription should allow both.

I know I'd LOVE to read FSM on my iPad while I'm held captive on my hour long commute each way every day.

It's just a thought anyway.

Same for the kindle and Nook readers. Digital format magazines are popping up everywhere.  Why not FSM.  That would be suh-weet!

There is an app in the iTunes store called Zinio that will let you read certain magazines.  Maybe the fine folks at FSM could look at getting on board with that?

Another idea would be to have the subscriber choose digital or print format.  Maybe offer a discount for choosing digital only?  Just a thought.  I don't get how some magazines charge you extra for the privilige of accessing an electronic version of the exact same printed material.

Just to be clear, you want your hard copy written subscription and an electronic version so you can read on your e-reader?

Using that logic, if you bought a hard copy book to read, then you should also get a free e-reader version too and vice versa?

Let's take it a step further; I've got old VHS tape movies, should I now be able to get a Blue Ray, DVD or digital copy of that movie for free too? I mean they now sell Blue Ray combo packs that include the DVD+digitial copy, I already own the movie on VHS, I should be able to get the digital version too.

Just playing devil's advocate here. A e-version would be neat for those who want and can use them, but free? You have to buy books to read on your e-reader (yes, I know there are some free books), why wouldn't you have to buy magazines to read on it as well? I can see paying less for an e-version in lieu of getting a hard copy though. Getting a discount since it probably costs less to distribute than a hard copy magazine makes sense.

I've always found it interesting that when folks have an e-reader device, they think they are entitled to free e-reading material because they own the hard copy.

Ideally, yes; but realistically I know that's not really an option.  I would settle for the option of one format or the other.  Prior to printing, the magazine is already in electronic format so it would actually serve as a cost saving measure too.

I'm not one of those who believes that because I own a VHS tape (which I do) that I should get the BlueRay, DVD and/or digital copy for free.  I do think that the times are a-changin' though.

Personally, I wouldn't be opposed to paying for both print and electronic versions of FSM.  First though, we have to get to the point where we have the option of picking one or the other.
