Posting photos

Well from one old codger to another- yes these things can be confusing. I have an employee who cannot understand why I don't know how to use Picasa...

I use Photobucket and it works well. Now, I drive 10 mph in first gear and probably have no idea how much better I could be, but it does the trick.

One thing you need to remember is that anything you put up there, unless you take extra steps, can be accessed by anyone.

It does assign a URL to each photo, and it's pretty easy to use. I have never set up sub folders, so I get a little annoyed when trying to find an older image and having to scroll through the album. But that can't be hard to overcome with a decent file tree.

The newest version of this forum has made it one step easier by adding a window controlled from a button, in which to paste the URL. It's that little icon below the flush left icon in the rich formatting window.

I for one and speak for many, would really like to see your work. Enjoy that Mac. I'm a PC man but that's just because I'm cheap.

I use Photobucket, it works.  Each picture has it's own URL you can put into a thread.  The FSM forum automatically adjusts the images that is actually put into the post, and readers can click on the picture to open a copy in the original size.  So you don't have to worry about linking to your super-high resolution pictures eating up their bandwidth when they open your thread.

I also like Photobucket. I established an account there just for pictures I wanted to post to the forum.  They have a little utility that shows the direct URL, and you click in that window and the direct address is automatically copied to your clipboard.  It is easy, then, to paste that address in the window that opens when you select the "picture" icon in the tool bar in the "rich formatting" message posting option.

I'll fourth Photobucket! I have recently been using my iPhone a lot to take photos as it is leaps and bounds better than my normal camera, and I like the fact that I can email the photos from my phone straight into my Photobucket account without having to hook anything up to a computer and transfer the images. So much more convenient as it cuts out that whole step.

Another photobucket user here. Been using it for 5+ (maybe very plus) years for purpose of sharing photos on a couple photography critique forums.

If you go the photobucket route,  just make sure you heed Don's advice and click on the "direct" link option to copy it to your clipboard. This is the first forum I've joined that uses the direct option, was a tad confusing at first.

Sounds like plenty of photobucket users here, so if you need some help, you are sure to get it. Like anything, it may be a bit confounding at first, but once you get it you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.

Looks like you have some serious tenure here, I'm sure there are lots of folks here that would love to see a sampling of your work, including me.

I use photobucket as well.  And I'm also a Mac user.  

Photobucket has a downloadable program that lets you export photos directly from your iPhoto program into photobucket without ever going to the photobucket website.  It comes in handy.

Well, I do believe I detect a consensus.  Photobucket it is.

I've just bought a new set of lights for taking pictures of models, and I have a new paper background roll on the way from Adorama.  When it gets here, I'll unlimber the ol' Pentax and get to work on this project.

No surprise, I am another photobucket user. I have been using it about 5 years, ever since I started using this place full time. I just create a new folder for each model, as they are in alphabetical order, its pretty easy to find the one I want. I do find it can be a bit temperamental at time. I have has occasions when the direct link doesn't work properly. It did use to freeze a lot, but seems a lot better recently.

I recently got a plain card background to taking pics of my completed builds, and it can make a world of difference.

Well, I've set up a Photobucket account.  All my photos are in Photoshop Elements Organizer.  I've spent the last hour trying to figure out how to get them from there into Photobucket.  I've set up an album (in Photoshop Elements.  That album has three pictures in it.  When I open up Photobucket and go to Upload, I get a nice, inviting screen saying "Drag and drop photos here."  But I can't figure out how to do that.  The computer gives me the choice between having Photoshop Elements on the screen or having Photobucket (in Firefox, my browser) on the screen - not both.  

I'm obviously missing something ludicrously obvious.  Are there any other Mac and Photoshop users out there who, once they're through laughing at my ineptitude, can clue me in on the secret?

Can't help you if you have a Mac. If you have windows you need to become familiar with Windows Explorer, your file manager.  And, it is much easier if you use a web browser than allows tabbed viewing of more than one web site, switching back and forth between sites by clicking on the appropriate tabs.  Most modern browsers do allow multiple web windows open like this.

I do not use the drag and drop feature of Photobucket, I use the "browse" feature.  With this you can browse through your computer's file structure.  You need to find the folder your photos are in.  I have separate folders I use for photos, instead of relying on a photo editing organizer.

Yeah, I cant help a lot with the Mac either , but like Don above I use the file explorer and navigate to the folder that I have the images saved in. Once there I usually highlight the images I want uploaded using shift-left click for a group of consecutive images or cntrl-left click for more than one images that is not consecutive. I dont think that I have ever used drag and drop.

On another note however, Photoshop does have a desktop 'app' that will allow you to target a set of folders on your machine and it will automatically upload or "backup" as it calls it, any pictures that are added to those folders to Photobucket.

I finally figured it out.  Part of the problem is that when you finish editing a picture in Photoshop Elements, the program automatically saves it as a Photoshop file (psp) -- rather than a jpeg.  It's easy to convert from psp to jpeg, but it does take a few keystrokes to do it.

In case anybody's interested, here's the process:

1.  Edit the pictures in the Photoshop Elements Editor, and save them in the Photoshop Elements Organizer.  The Editor will want to save them as Photoshop (PSP) files, but when you click "save" it will give you the choice to save them as jpegs.  Do so.

2.  Still in the Photoshop Elements Organizer, create an "album" and put the photos you want to post in it.

3.  Drag and drop the photos you want to post from the organizer to some empty space on the monitor screen.  (On mine, there's a little room at the bottom, at each end of the app dock.)

4.  Open your browser and go to the Photobucket homepage.  Click "Upload."

5.  Drag and drop the photos you docked on the monitor screen into your Photobucket "library."

6.  Pick one of the photos and left click on it.  A box will appear that says, among other choices, "Copy URL."  Click on that option.

7.  Go the the FSM Forum page and open a new post.  Click on "Insert Image," then right click, then left click on "Paste."  The photo will appear in the post.

I suspect there's a faster way to do it, but that's the one I figured out - and it works.  Now that I have a little practice I can post a photo in less than a minuted.
