Book / reference forum ? ( We would like a admin to have a look at this )

Hi folks~

I apologize for the long delay in responding to this thread. FSM staff activity on the Forum isn't a question of interest; it's one of time. As many of you know, April was a big month of travel for us (it's THE month for model shows). I was away for a week and a half (AMPS was part of the itinerary--OnlineEXTRA gallery to come), and the others have been on the road for shows as much or more. The deadlines for the print magazine always come first, so this was one of those times when we couldn't give the website as much attention as we'd like to.

However, since I got back, I've at least kept up with the discussion here for a references forum, and it seems like a good idea. My concern was where to put it and how to structure it. The criteria for new topics have to be very strict: they must be well-defined and not likely to siphon off discussion from the main modeling subject areas. But I'm also concerned about getting too many sticky topics at the top of each modeling subject forum, so I've opted for adding a Reference Materials forum to Tools and Techniques area (which has now been renamed accordingly): http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=28

Consider this a "beta test": let's drive it a while and see how it works.

I have the same feelings Richard.

I have seen admins in the forums several times also in suggestions and feedback, but nothing has happened. I am begining to feel overlooked.

I don't want to pass judgement, maybe there is a good reason, but it is frustrating.
I am very excited about this and would like to see it happen, I hope the admins will show us some interest soon.

I sent an e-mail to FSM reqesting an answer. I feel that we should not be ignored I am now going to make this a personal issue for the both of us If it causes a problem for me in regards to the forum so be it We are here to be assisted by the administrators so where are they

Personally I have more or less 17000 books and magazines.

I am used that people from everywhere asks me how is book "x" where can I find info about vehicle "y".

It is therefore one of the things that can really add value to this forum as books are pricey and budjts are short.

For example I have over 30 books on the F/A-18 Hornet. They were bought during two decades, but if someone asks what is the best book about the Hornet? I will be very glad to show him the differences between the best books, and tell him my preferences even if his taste is diferrent than mine. If we have different tastes he will ask me oppinions about other tittles rather than my favorite.

I absolutly agree with the idea! Hope the Kalmbach freindly guys will bring this idea to ife!

Sounds like a great idea to me. Perhaps it could be linked to some kind of reference database? I don't know what the practical difficulties would be but it would be an invaluable resource for research

Why not have the admin guys, sticky a thread on book resources in the Off Topic Forum or General Modeling Discussion Forum. This way it will be there in an always accessible place. Always at the top and won't be moved 5 pages back. This way the admin guys can see how much traffic it will get and it will let them know if it warrants its own forum. Act as a moderator for a while and try to keep the postings focused on relavent info rather than a segue on good beers and pickled herring. It will give you a better measurement of use and activity and if it gets alot of traffic then more validity to your request. If not then the sticky can be removed and the issue becomes moot.

That would be great! I think it would help all of us so that way we can go to book shop and have a list of what books you already want instead of having to read the book in the store to find out if thats what you want. You would already know what books to get. I think we should set up a refference forum.

Here's another post of support from an American. I saw a great post that led me to a fantastic sight that had vid clips of Russian equipment like a 'Grad' firing, and T-90 driving and firing. There were a ton more that I never got to see since I lost the thread, and a search came up empty. I thought i bookmarked it topo, but I have so many I have yet to find it.

This new Forum wouyld be fantastic!

1st Kath, Nick.....whatever....both of you. I live in a city called Aalborg, thats 300 km from Copenhagen. I lived in Copenhagen for 3 years so I know it, and there is no armored car anymore. If you ever get to go to Denmark again then let me know and I'll meet you........doesn't matter where it is.

Kath, I used to bartend in a place that had Murphy's on draught and the owner didn't mind if I partook towards the end of the night, oh happy times.
years ago there was a publication I subscribed to named 'Divers speak out', where members gave their input on equipment and resorts. It was expensive but completely unbiased because they didn't rely on advertisement dollars. That was before the web, I'm sure there are plenty of them now online.
Monrad, Here there's no 'd' on the end but it's the same stuff. Pure heaven. Around the holidays I get it 'fresh', although dare I admit, from a Norwegian (may Odin forgive me)

Thanks Monrad, where about in Denmark are you from I? visited Copenhagen many years ago the little Mermaid etc I seem to remember a converted car that was use as an armoured car by the Danish resistance, parked near the police station mind you I am going back 25 years! Is it still there?

Firstly the only way us Brits will eat herring is Kippers, Guinness, is known as Guinness, we have another called Murphys bit like a thin Guinness, do you have it in the USA?

Bit late into this but I think its a great idea any reply from Lawrence yet It would be good if FSM could set up a catalogue of reference material, we can pray and hope!
Another well known site to do with underwater craft ( no advertising) has regular book reviews and ratings by members perhaps we could do something like that?Just think Ausf you could do a book review on Shermans ha! ha! how do you get minus 5 stars!

You're welcome. Makes sense to consolidate referances. As the forum grows it'll have to be broken up for sanities sake. Referances have been piling up lately. I can't recall the newest forum, might be the welcome/intro forum.

Moving old threads to a new reference forum! hmmm maybe it would be a good idea. there is alot of threads at the moment that should be in a reference forum, but in the end its up to the admins..........wish they would reply to this thread.

Isolating referances would be a good thing. Sticky theads like "online stores", "members' sites", and then popular subjects as an idea developes as to the most wanted refs. would be good to start. Do you guys think moving old threads that would better suited to the ref. forum would be a good idea??
