Page Load Times
Posted by David Voss on Friday, April 11, 2003 1:06 AM
I'm looking for feedback regarding the page load times, primarily here in the forums. Page load times simply refers to how quick the page loads for you. I'm not looking for specific times, I don't want anyone taking out their stopwatch and timing it. I'm just looking for an overall general perception.

  • Do you consider it fast, average, slow?

  • Are there certain pages that you find extremely slow?

  • Have you noticed any differences in page loading times over the past couple of weeks? Better or worse?

As always, any and all comments are appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

David,

I'm running an old computer so the page loads are probably slower than they normally would be anyways, but I haven't noticed any differences in load times on my machine. Accounting for the speed of my computer I don't think the load times are bad at all. I don't subscribe to a lot of different boards so I don't really have much to compare with but I'm very satisfied with these forums.

I have found it varies from day to day. Sometimes it's quick, and sometimes it's quite a bit slower. The worst page is the login/home page.

My load times vary as well. It's only when I have other stuff going on (downloads and such) that I have any sort of problem. And even then it's usually only a matter of a few seconds. The only time I notice delays when my connection is clean (no downloads in progress) is when there are a ton of people on the site. But again, no real problems. So far, "mechanically", this is a fine site in all regards.

Also, if you know what they are, it may be good to list some basic system specs and your connection type with your response. More info is more helpful than not enuff!! I'm on a P4, 2.4Ghz, 512MB RAM with a DSL connection.

Seems to be quite fine to me David.... there are times where it can be a bit sluggish but it seems to be in times where there is an increase in net traffic. When this site is sluggish...all sites seem to be in the same category.

blackwolfscd makes a good point about system info. Mine is 700Mhz , 512 RAM with a cable connection.

When I first came here a month or so ago I was on a dial up and it did seem to take a long time for the pages to load. Sometimes it was agonizingly slow. So I had my cable connection turned back on. (Big Smile [:D] I was just looking for an excuse, thanks) Things still seemed to be a little slow but I have noticed a difference over the last couple of weeks in the way that pages load. They pop right up the way they should now.

While I'm here, there are a couple of other things I've noticed. I use a mouse with a scroll wheel and when I would go to another page of a thread and scroll up or down it would take me to a previous page. That doesn't seem to happen anymore.

Next, sometimes when I click on a link in someone's post and open another page, my machine stops responding. Sometimes I can't close the other page without using the task manager. And sometimes when I get back here, this page won't respond either. It usually seems to happen when I go to someone's personal site. I don't know how the two pages interact but it does happen.

Sometimes the post preview doesn't work. I haven't been posting that much but when I do, a lot of times I have included a link and I use the preview to make sure it works. If this is any help, it usually seems to happen when I am logged in to the site and not so much when I just reply to a thread as I'm doing now.

And in a related item, when I do use the preview and then go ahead and make the post I get the *flood control* warning. But when I look, my post is there.

I'm not complaining. Big Smile [:D] I think this is a great place. And I could tell you have been working on the site.

Thanks
Tony

I haven't had any problems untill today. It could have been my ISP that was the problem. I am on Always Off Line and today around one PM the site was very slow. It took over a minute to go from topic to topic or subject to subject. Tonight I don't have any problems.

For the most part, I haven't had any problems accessing any part of the site. I will occassionally get some hang time going from place to place within the site, but nothing that makes me want to take it out on my keyboard. As far as whether I have noticed any change within the past couple of weeks, I really haven't except that I haven't had any hang time recently. I am running a P3 with 128 MB RAM at 600 Mhz with a cable hookup.

My sincere appreciation to the staff for making and maintaining a great website, especially with all the other things you have to do.
