What do you think about... Events, Shows & Meetings Forum?
Posted by David Voss on Thursday, July 1, 2004 12:16 AM
I was thinking... Tongue [:P]

Take a look at the following set of posts -- these are spread out among various forums, but does anyone else see a common theme here?

Newark meet next month
IPMS Manila, Philippines
North East Texas Modelers
To all Gauteng modelers
midland model expo 23rd may
Aussie Modellers
Korean International Modelers Assoc. Meet
To all Filipino Modelers
monthly meets in the uk

What's the opinions about revamping or redefining the "Community Announcements" forum (does it serve a useful purpose for anyone?) and making a forum dedicated to discussions about upcoming shows, meets, conventions, member get-togethers, etc. -- for people who may want to see who else is planning on attending, discuss details about the event, perhaps meeting up in person. This forum could also become home for the national/regional threads which have been popping up.

I'm just thinking the General board swallows up the shows, meets, convention topics really quickly -- and they're not really "announcements".

Would creating a forum for these types of posts help in the promotion of events within the modeling community?

The reason I posted mine in two places was because I didn't think anyone would see it in just one place. I've posted it once before in one place and it didn't even get looked at. So I put it in two places. At least this time I got a response from a former Texas modeler who now lives overseas. Ah well.

It is a good question... what would we call it?

The intention is to help get modelers together. Be it at events, conventions, shows, swap meets, meetings, contests, competitions, regional gatherings, clubs or even smaller, informal get togethers like a trip to a museum, air show, etc.

A community service reminder...

If you're hosting or know of an upcoming event, make sure it's listed in the FineScale Modeler Events section!

Same for clubs, organizations, etc. -- if you belong to or know of a club, make sure it's listed in the FineScale Modeler Clubs section!

Doesn't that fit in General Discussion, Off Topic, or even Community Announcements? Are you reinventing the wheel? or is it you're just calling a wheel a tire?

It's very important to get your event into the online Events calendar. We're feeding the Coming Events column in the magazine from the website calendar's database, so we want all the input going there. It's also important to get it in as soon as possible--even if it's a year out.

If you put it in the calendar less than 4 months from the date of the event, it probably won't get listed in the magazine. If you enter it early, it may appear in Coming Events in two or even three issues.
