FSM cookies
Posted by Daveash on Thursday, July 1, 2004 5:47 PM
Could someone from the mag please let us know what cookies are installed on our PC`s when we register.
I have just run adaware and spybot, both of which picked up tracking cookies. None of these has FSM in their addresses, so I deleted them all and found that I had to log in again on returning to the site.
I do not mind having the FSM cookie, but would like to know which one it is so that I do not delete it again.
thanks in advance

Sure, but I don't know what the FSM cookie looks like in adaware/spybot.

If I have time, I'll check it at home tonight and see what adaware/spybot identifies it as.

There are three, all done by the forum software. They are:
FSM04User (this is the one with your username in it)
FSM04SAK
ASPISESSIONDCQCDTCTC (although this may be a randomly generated name)

They are common among forum software and simply hold your user name and some information to keep track of things that pertain to the current forum session. It isn't FSM putting the cookies there, it's the Snitz forum software and they are nothing to be at all concerned about as far as I know. I use PHPBB on a couple of forums and it does the same thing.

I ran adaware & spybot and it didn't bring up the site's cookies. Question [?]

If these are the names you're seeing, these are okay.

FSM04User - This is for storing your username and other forum preferences.
FSM04SAK - This is a session key -- used for authentication purposes.
ASPISESSIONDCQCDTCTC - This is a temporary cookie set by the server.

You'll want to keep those.
