Should we now have member moderators
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 16, 2004 7:37 PM
Should we now have member moderators, two in each forum, i.e. Two armour modelers moderating in the armour forum only and pick two from the aircraft forums and so on

It would have sorted a lot of the things that have happened in the past, like the swearing, spammers and advertisers and might have saved the off topic forum

Just an idea that’s been going around since the site started

I think this is an idea who's time has come.
As we all know, David, Lawrence, Michael, ET AL are very busy with multiple websites/magazines to prepare and operate. As we approch the 40,000 member mark we still have about 5 people doing all the "police" work. While the Kalambach/FSM staffers are doing a fine job I believe that some of us that use and enjoy this fine forum on a daily basis should step up and help out.

You are right, but it is a thankless job. You become the "face" of the site/forum. You also become the target of those trolls who gain "keyboard courage" behind the anonymity of an online persona and the resentment of those who feel that they are more qualified than you to be a moderator. Just wait until someone feels slighted by moderator having the nerve to delete their post.

Like I told the Armorama webmaster when our forums had too few moderators, "if you try to moderate everything, you moderate nothing."

Yes! I want to be one!

Floggings are on Tuesdays for the following offenses:

1) Posting even slightly off-topic: 5 lashes

2) Posting a dumb questions that has been asnwered before: 10 lashes

3) Posting suggestions on how to weather a kit to make it more dirty: 8 lashes (models are far too dirty these days; we need to keep it clean around here).

4) Posting anything in any forum on any WWII German subject: 25 lashes (WWII German stuff has been done to death, it's time to move on.)

5) Disagreeing with the moderator: 100 lashes! This is the most unholy of sins.

There are probably a few more rules needed, but we'll make them up as we go along. Evil [}:)]

Satire aside Smile [:)], because I know this was a serious suggestion, I'd just like to say that I've seen volunteer moderating work pretty well, but I've also seen it fail miserably.

I haven't seen much on this site that requires, in my opinion, more moderators than we already have in the FSM staff.

Rob's point about "keyboard courage" is a very good one.

Regards,

-Drew

I don't think they are needed. If anyone sees an objectionable post, a quick eMail to Lawrence or David will get their attention. I'd rather have the FSM staff moderate rather than creating a few member Czars.

I have to kind of go along with Rick's (rjkplasticmod) idea. If it seems out of line or objectionable, shoot an email to Lawrence or Dave. I know they have more then they can do now, but they are best suited to do the enforcing. We can do the policing. semper fi, mike

Yeah, but it's good trouble!

I really don't think we need moderators here...least of all me as a moderator.

I think the FSM crew is doing a fine job here. Some folks seem to think they are being oppressed, but I don' t see it that way.

Agreed. In fact, I think more, and especially volunteer, moderators could (and I stress could) lead to oppression and dissent. That was the whole point of my post above.

What we really need to do is work on our models more than we agonize over the whys and wherefores of this forum. Smile [:)]

I am a moderator on www.modelwarships.com and offer my services here as well. I am disabled and a full time student, so I have plenty of useless time on my hands. Sooooo if you need someone, here I be!

That is the wisest idea out there and keeps everyone else out of the line of fire if someone does have a bit of web rage!Tongue [:P]
