<A TITLE="Click for more information about car" STYLE="text-decoration: none; border-bottom: medium solid green;" HREF="http://search.targetwords.com/u.search?x=5977|1||||cars|AA1VDw">Car</A> is in red and underlined in the Auto forum. When I click on it it takes me to another site. Is it just on my machine or can other members see it? Has some one hacked on to the web site in the form of advertisement?

Ah, you're infected with adware/spyware -- whatever you want to call it. I'll find the link to how to correct it.

Adware, Spyware, and Malware

Best thing to do is download a copy of Ad-aware 6.0 if you already don't have it installed.

Thanks David. I have Ad-aware 6.0 pro on my system and ran it. It corrected the problem. Now, how it got past my firewall is my next problem.

Again, thanks.

Well technically, your firewall isn't going to stop it. It's something your firewall may see as being okay -- which is why there are products like Ad-aware.

Just make sure you've ran Windows Update, keep your stuff current and use Ad-aware more often. Wink [;)]

I've never used the professional version. Does it have an option to run it in the background or something that could catch stuff before it infects your system? I might be thinking of Spybot.

Spybot Search and Destroy? I've been using that for the longest time, but i haven't seen any options that will let it run in the background... I have Spybot-S&D v1.2. Is Adware better than Spybot?

David

The professional version does run in the background at all times, unless you disable it. It will give warnings that someone is attempting to access your system or has detected suspicious data coming into your system. It will block all activity untill told what to do. You can set it up any way you like in the set up section. It is a PITA to set up though.

For Spybot, there are a couple of features under the immunize section -- browser helper and miscellaneous protections.

Adaware and Spybot are both very good programs. It doesn't hurt to have both installed. Sometimes one might catch something the other doesn't.

Spybot also has a good tools section which I've found handy to have.
