Wonderfest 2005 ... Be There FSM.
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, November 4, 2004 11:38 AM
This annual event is probably one of the best for Figure, Sci-Fi, Anime, etc. I know Matt Usher has been there a couple times and can testify to this. Could you please consider putting this in the gallery or show for a future issue?

You have plenty of time to consider since the annual event occurs in late May or early June... I can't remember. It is in Louisville and is a tremendous event.

I heartily concur with the Mud man. I've been going every year since 2001. Wonderfest continues to draw more and more people and models every year. There were more models at WF last year than almost all of my local IPMS shows put together. Surely THAT should send a message to the FSM Staffers.

However, Mud, we're still waiting for the WF '02 report in the magazine. Angry [:(!] I think it'll be a long while before we get any kind of mention in the great annals of FSM. [sarcasm] There's just too many P-51 and Tiger tanks kits out there to review...[/sarcasm] That's why we have Modeler's Resource Magazine...

Modeler's Resource is a great rag. I find myself looking forward to it's release more than FSM anymore. I still hold out hope that FSM will return to it's inclusive greatness of days gone by.

I want to make sure this thread doesn't get off-topic. There have been lots of threads that discuss the focus of FSM. I'm just trying to hype up a very important contest and a great opportunity for FSM. It would be a great article/pictoral.

Here is something I found on Starshipmodeler.com. I think if you look at some of the pictures... you will be amazed.

We try to attend as many different shows as we can, so I can't say for sure if we'll make it to Wonderfest this year. I do agree that it's a great show for science fiction modelers. Top-notch stuff.

Lots of the Wonderfest 2003 photos I shot are online on this site. Click on "OnlineExtra" then click on "Online Extra Articles." The Wonderfest photos are in the "Sci-fi/fantasy/TV/movie gallery."

I'd buy 2-3 issues of FSM that contained a WF article.

Well, considering the sci-fi forum here seems to have the least amount of activity, I think that expresses the general attitude of the readership of FSM. Sci-Fi is just NOT a source of great interest. Most hard-core sci-fi modelers seemt to have come to accept this as the way things are and take refuge in Modeler's Resource and personal websites.

But I still keep hope for that one day a new generation of readers will start asking for something different from cars, planes, tanks and ships.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you can attend all the IPSMA Cons, why can't you send someone everyother year to this? If nothing else it would give you material you could use for two years. I have to drive from Minneapolis to go, I have gone the last three years and plan on going for my fourth, and I would be happy to transport someone from your staff to and from so all you have for expenses would be there time, entry fees, lodging and food.

I have also been a subsriber to FSM for over 5 years and read the magazine even longer then that....

First off, would like to say that I enjoy reading FSM. When the stack of mags comes in it get first priority. But it would be nice if we (sci-fi modelers) got tossed more than the occasional bone. I mean, there's an entire mag for car modeling but FSM still will run acticles on building cars, while we get a how to put to gether a Gundam.

'Course, I'l admit, I've been remiss in submitting my models to FSM for thier reader gallery. Perhaps, just perhaps, they take notice.

'Course, I also think the reason that the scif forum here is so slow if that most of us post over on Starship Modeler...or at least I do.

WF IS a major model show. It would make perfect sense for FSM to cover it.

Aurora-7.

I should soon have a few pics that will be posted both in the Figs and SciFi sections.
The Figs will be mostly anime or garage kit items and the Scifi ones will be mostly anime based.

I want to show people that there is more to those categories than military, nudes and Gundam, Macross, Sailor Moon, Evangelion, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.

Currently working on a quiet a few projects that hopefully should all be finished around the same time so that I can take a good photo session and post the pics here and on my upcoming web-site.

So what's in the works:
Wave 1/100 Junchoon with Boomeran Unit
Tsukuda 1/330 At-At vs Snow speeder
A few Dougram Kits
1/12 Alien Powerloader
1/48 Standard Orguss II
1/48 Mospeada Veritech Fighter
1/12 Mosepada Legioss

I think many people are not into those genres simply because they are not aware of the diversity of subjects that can be build.

How many peole here have build a Scopedog or similar??

Such a simple statement. Such a simple fact.

It's amazing at the effort put forth to not want to upset a couple armor guys or a few plane guys. They might complain in the editor's page. The b&$^& that I've heard about that Gundam article in the local guys show was really pretty pathetic. So I entered a few planes in their next show and beat them. Me, a sci-fi guy. Can't join 'em, beat 'em.Big Smile [:D]

It is interestng that in my exerience scifi guys can do a heck of a lot more with a heck of a lot less. We're used to scratching detail, building our own plans, etc. Not saying that the armor/plane/car guys don't do excelence work, just that we get crappier kits, no (or little) aftermarket detail sets, and poorer refrences.

I'd love to see FSM help with the growing resurgnace of scifi modeling, it's coming back with a vengence.

Me and (hopefully) 4 other guys will be road-tripin' to WF in '05.

Denver to Witchita, Witchita to KS, KS to Lou'ville.

Going to be a heck of a ride....

I'm planning on going this year for the first time. I don't know why I've never went before because I'm only about 3hr from where it's held.

I'm still crunching the numbers to see if I can afford the trip and take the time to
attend, but I will give a 'qualified' "I'll be there"

And while there was a lot of truly wonderful sci-fi and fantasy stuff at the IPMS
Nationals in Phoenix this year, I don't see how a publication like FSM could
miss the premier Sci-Fi/Fantasy model show in the country. There was so much
stuff from this last years WF that I would have loved to have seen at the IPMS
Nationals, but due to money, many SF modelers make WF their only show to
attend.

OK, off my soapbox now. Big Smile [:D]

The Sci-Fi section isn't the smallest on the forum, that would be Real Space. One thing I'd like to point out is that if you combined the Figure section with the Sci-Fi section, it would be the fourth biggest section on the forum. Though I'm not advocating that, those are the two modeling groups that are represented at Wonderfest. Yes there is a source of great interest, it's just not being tap into by the magazine. Modelers are like cats, they come back to those who feed them. Feed us FSM! Tongue [:P]

I smell a groundswell of support for FSM at Wonderfest 2005... more importantly, to actually print the coverage too!

Back in August of 1988, FSM had a 36" long spacecraft scratcbuild on the cover. The scratchbuild was an FSM Showcase. I guess Bob Hayden, the editor back then, was willing to throw us sci-fi guys a bone.

I'm planning on going again this coming year. Got all my plans laid out, $200 set aside already (almost gonna cover the hotel with just what's already set aside - and I've still got six months of saving left!!!), plans to room w/Dave "Blappy" Guertin, already picked out a new Hawaiian print shirt for the unofficial Pre-Lizard Lounge hotel lounge party and am generally getting worked up already for seeing folks from earlier this year.

Well, to my knowledge, this year was the first time that a couple of us showed up wearing Hawaiian print shirts - Nebulaclass, BolloD2 and myself - so guess it's a brandspankin' new tradition. Big Smile [:D] Gonna try and get a few more folks involved at WF 2K5. Show up anytime after about 3pm in the lounge in a Hawaiian print shirt. That's how it worked this year when Jim "MAR10" Martin and I hooked up.

I had previously announced at another forum I no longer frequent that I was going to wear the shirt and to look for me in the lounge Friday afternoon/evening and I'd buy a drink. I walked in w/my HP shirt on and sat not far from Jim at the bar. He looked at me said "Let me see, if you're wearing a Hawaiian print shirt you've got to be Griffworks." It just got better from there. I got up at one point and started walking the halls, looking for familiar faces. At some point, we had more than 20 folks assembled around three or four of those small bar tables, BSing, drinking, eating and just generally having a good time.

And then there's the Unofficial Saturday Night Pool Party & Swap Meet that starts sometime around... 5pm-ish and lasts 'til everybody leaves.

You mean we're only supposed to wear them (hawaiian shirts) on Firday? And here I was wearin' them around all weekend.

And there will be at least 1 more guy in a hawwaiian shirt, BradGuy is going to be roadtrippin' with the rest of the Commies.
