No Make 'n Take, Now What?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 1, 2003 9:33 AM
This question is central to the future of the hobby. Now that support has been withdrawn for the make 'n take program, what mechanisms exist for attracting new hobbyists? Does the make 'n take program still exist in an out-of-pocket capacity? Does FineScale Modeler have any plans to this end? Does IPMS have any programs? What can we learn from the model railroad community? I would be willing to put a little time into developing something to this end, so long as I were not alone in the endeavor.

Derek,

I'm not the original poster, but the make 'n take prgram caught my eye:

It looks like the program is still running, so I'm not sure what Zaphod is talking about. ???

Well, as far as programs to get new ppl into modeling, I say we do it ourselves! It's time we(as a community) stop looking to others to promote the hobby, and start promoting it ourselves! Next time you have some extra cash, buy a coupla snap-tites and head on over to the local YMCA, or Boy/Girl Scout's troop! Let's all chip in and promote modelng ourselves! I know everytime I get a chance, I tell others about the goodness of modeling!
PS: I first got into modeling because my therapist told my parents that something physical, such as making models, would help with my ADD and Dyspraxia. Video Games and Models, the two best therapies for ADD and Dyspraxia in the Universe, if you ask me!

Lufbery,
I would be happy to be wrong about make and take. I think it's a great program. I guess I got a hold of some bad information. Has anyone held a Make and Take? How did it go?
Tenchimuyo,
I agree 100%. We need to be the PR people, because it's obvious no one is going to do it for us. Ain't nothin' to it, but to do it.

OK, the answer to the question is:
QUOTE: Well, as far as programs to get new ppl into modeling, I say we do it ourselves! It's time we(as a community) stop looking to others to promote the hobby, and start promoting it ourselves! Get the club together, or friends, or people on the internet, any modeler. Go to the scouts, 4-H, FFA, do a mall show, whatever.
Get the youngsters interested!
