hi guys-- im pretty much a noobie but i have been reading the forums for a while--- i like the idea of group builds, but i think some seem a little to broad--i think it sould be something like'everybody does a specific aircraft, ship, figure or my favorite--- armor' ----i dont mean any armor or aircraft ect i mean every body does a b-17 or tiger 1- or napoleon ect-- then we all compare our interpretations of something specific and learn somethingApprove [^]Big Smile [:D]-- in any case i like the idea but have been to chicken to join so farLaugh [(-D]-- thanks-- treadwell

The badges can be annoying but you can choose not to see them.

Life is fun and so is this forum.Big Smile [:D] I changed my reply because everyones intitled to their opinion. Here's my opinion. Negativity on a regular basis is a bummer.

The whole badge thing is silly and annoying anyway. It would be nice to see them go away.

I think that when you have close to 60,000 members in this forum, you'll have a hard time having everybody agree on just about any topic, including what a GB should be. Voting on it would do no good, because the numbers that disagree would feel slighted. I agree with Rick about letting things be, and if you dont find one you like, make your own!

I think the GB forum is getting out of hand in a different way. Not so much as the topic it was started on, but merely the topics discussed. I believe the creators of a GB should have to fill out a form and submit it to start a group build. If the build is accepted, the creator will be made a moderator of the group build and will be able to control posts and such.

After some discussion about it, I started a Gundam GB. Given that mecha robot modeling isn't very popular here, it seemed best to leave it completely open. Bandai makes an astounding variety of kits and having it completley open is definitely a-kin to a "any WW2" GB. In my mind, the thing that makes it okay is the small number of people interested and that it's a pretty specific topic, in of itself.

As for the Badge thing, I'm in agreement with Rick about the badges. I see them as advertisement for the Group Build. Once the one I've started is done, I'll see if there's interest in another. If there is, I'll start that and there will be a different Badge that will say 2006 rather than 2005 and with a different picture. If they become popular enough to be done 2 or 3 times I year, they'll probably get roman numerals or somesuch.

I guess my thoughts are best summed up with this: If you're introducing a less common era or subject, keep it broad. If there's lots of interest in the subject/era already, you can tighten it up a bit. I imagine WW2 is probably the most common category possible.

You can also make badges clickable links to the thread in question. Go on, give mine a try! Here's the tags for the Text & Graphic profile:
[*url="The Link To Your Thread"] [*img]The Link to Your Badge[*/img][*/url]

Remove the * and put in the URLs needed to make it work.

hehehe, I hear ya. They really are getting quite 'loose' in their policies, and no one seems to give a s***. One of the things that REALLY peeves me is the wearing of a badge prior to actually finishing anything. And most of the members that give a response never finish anything anyways. Meh, it just ain't what it used to be.

Thats true, Rick, I would just like to see more specific GB's thats all.

Why not start one of your own ? Make it as specific as you like. Just remember, the narrower the topic, the less members that are likely to be attacted.

Well William, if a GB doesn't fit your expectations, don't sign up. I agree that many of them are pretty broad, but if members are having fun with them why should you or I care ?

Well, I tend to agree with the statement that a "WWII GB" is a bit too broad to have any real meaning, but since it seems to be a popular one who am I to say. I attempted to start a GB focused on Sir Winston Churchill and got a thunderous lack of response - perhaps if I had indicated it was "OK to depict a captured Churchill, with German markings" there would have been more interest Big Smile [:D]

I've only been reading this forum for a few months now, but there seem to be various waves of sentiment to rein in the group builds, who can use the badges, etc., none of which get very far. My theory is that as long as you can find the build(s) that interest you in the first place you can always just hit the "Watch this topic" button so that you can find it again.

If I had to do that I would not be in any group builds. There is no Luftwaffe Dayfighter group build. There is no US late WWII tank group build. Group Builds are to help modelers gain knowledge of model building by having other members help him/her through his/her problems. A P-51D is completely different from another P-51D.

GB forum getting out of hand?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 15, 2005 1:49 PM
I popped into the Gb forum and noticed some GB's like WW 2armor, or German Armor GB. I think that these Gb's are not necessary and should be stopped because it voids the main idea of a group build, people sharing advice on a similair topic. Thats hard to do when a GB is covering every German armored vehicle in WW2 or even worse every vehicle in WW2. Sorry just needed to vent my frustration but lets narrow down the topics to what they used to be.
