                        My reaction was the same as rlawson's. The corsair article did not work at all because it gave no reason for why these kits were being chopped up and glued together.

                        When doing articles on conversions, I suggest explaining what the defects in the original kit are and how changes correct those problems.

                        I agree with most of the criticism. FSM is great for inspiration, and I love to see the beautiful contest and professional models, but my favorite items are step by step build-ups. I'm not much into ships, but the Pennsylvannia article was along the lines of what I like to see. The Corsair article, as many have stated, was worthless because it was incomplete. Nice idea, TERRIBLE execution. I'm sure the article AS SUBMITTED was great, it just all didn't make it to the magazine. I'm sorry to see FSM has succumbed to the shallow whims of the mainstream public. Unfortunately, in this age of immediate gratification, the "wow" factor is what has become important, and the way to get there is secondary. I am growing more and more attracted to specialty modeling sites on the internet that feature detailed kit buildups. I can see the time coming where FSM has outlived it's usefulness, and I cancel.

                        One thing that bothers me - I subscribe to the magazine because I am a reader (and a pack rat) and like to curl up at night and study the articles and dream.

                        But why, Why, WHY do you guys keep putting the stuff for the next issue up so damn early????? I want to thrill of opening the magazine and going, Wow, this is neat, not, Oh, yeah, just like on the website.

                        I think that the October issue was OK, and I enjoy the mix of basic and advanced techniques. The "Look What I Can Do" articles are an inspiration to me, and are in large part why I subscribe - the F105 was *sweet*, though I wouldn't consider making something like that just yet.

                        The weakest article, I felt, was the one on the Hawk missile system.
                        The strongest article was on the Patton. Holy cow! *Nice* work and beautiful photos of a 1/72 armor project!

                        I am very disgusted with the whole thing !I think that with the price of a subscription that you charge you could have a lot more magazine! What with the all the advertising on almost every page you could cut the rates in half. I had a subscription for ten years but i can no longer afford the rates. I'll just go back to HOT ROD for ten bucks a sub and be happy By the way you can have all my past issues too!

                        Hey guys, I've been away from modeling awhile, but FSM is always a welcome sight when it gets to me a few weeks later here in northern Iraq. Like most, I wish that there were more detailed "how to's," so that some of us average modelers can get better. I always love to see the reader's gallery; that's always an inspiration. It's good to see and appreciate other modelers' creations. Remember, these articles are written by our fellow modelers. If they went through in painstaking detail, there would be less room for additional articles. I'm sure someone out there has a great "how to" story in the works to share with the rest of us. So keep 'em coming, guys and gals!!

                        Personally, I thought October's issue was better than September's.

                        I'll also echo everyone's thought on the Corsair article, I was certainly scratching my head. I did liked the Pennsy article too.

                        What I don't quite get is the F-105 article praise. It's 10 nice pictures of an awesome model, however it doesn't say how things were done, or even what an F-105 did, so I can't see how this can be called a "feature' article.

                        I thought the suggestion for opening stuck paint jars was good. I've used that method up until a few years ago when my wife gave me a set of strap wrenches as a Christmas gift. A strap wrench works much better than a pair of pliers. Since using them I have not crushed a jar cap at all, and or the rare occation of a really tough lid I have been successful using one strap wrenct on the lid and one on the jar itself.

                        Yeah Ive been waiting for my local store get them on the shelf, been waiting since last issue, But when i got it home and looked at it i wasnt impressed i thought the airbrush would have been more informative and the patton tank that looked like something i would have done when i was 6 and only took a day, Not saying the guy didnt do a good job alot of the bent fender is outa scale. But thats my own opinion ithought i could have been layed out better with more articles and how toos. oh sorry for the tank bashing its only an opinion.

                        I realy thought that the (hole in the paper) airbushing technique was quite a good idea...
                        Wish I would have thought of that...

                        Also the 1970s model hobby shop was very interesting. brought back some fond memories..

                        I went back and reread the Corsair article last night and have to concur with the comment about it being edited with a chainsaw. (I'm mostly building armor these days, so I only skimmed it the first time). It appears as though the author used 3 different kits (an Italieri, Hasegawa, and Tamiya) for parts, but you never get a list of what kits they are in one place. As far as a I can tell, you never even learn what Corsair model the Tamiya is.

                        I also think the reference to figures 20, 21, and 22 at the end of the article should have been caught by the editors. I understand that the magazine only has so many pages and you may have to cut articles down, but this could have been done better.

                        I still really liked the article about the M48 details - it was short and to the point, showed a good idea, and demonstrated the really good work that can be done in a smaller scale.

                        As I become more advanced in my techniques I find little info in the articles of FSM. Please keep some How To articles to attract more modeling enthusiasts. Those How To articles are what have attracted my young son and his friends to take up the hobby.

                        By way of comparison, your sister magazine Model Railroader generally has more detailed articles on the various kitbashes, superdetailing, and scratch-building projects. They also have nice "prototype" articles that give you information that would allow you to do your own modeling. I'm going to make an attempt to write an article that I think would provide this level of information, although I'm not sure my modeling skills are up to the level displayed in the magazine in general. Perhaps somebody who really can model would like to hook up with me for a joint effort, since I think I can write fairly well.

                        I'm not a model Airplane builder, but will definitely vote the F-105 D # 1 of the 3 top best in the magazine this month.
                        Followed by a really close " Show Case" My last but not least is really close only by the toss of a coin # 3 is "Preppen a Patton" even though I'm not a small scale Tank modeler..
                        I only build 1:35th scale Armor and wish all the Armor models were 1:24th scale....With all that wonderful detail the Armored models have, if they were all in 1:24th scale they would be perfect, as all that detail would be shown off so much better..
                        Maybe it's just these old eye's arn't as good as they once were ....It's getting harder to see the miniature pieces, holding those miniature pieces with these old fingers is another thing... LOL..."RC" Cowboy [C):-)]

                        I think that in order to get a better idea of which articles readers enjoyed, that a different voting system should be used. I would like to see people vote for their 3 most favorite articles from the copy and rate them on a first, second, third basis. I believe it would help show how close things are together. For example, the article on the Israeli Hawk missile launcher would be a close second to the F-105 article in my own opinion.

                        pegleg, if you leave of the "s" at the end of greatmodels... I did it once accidentally.

                        I liked the method one of the authors used to detail the tracks on the little tank, that was a helpful technique.

                        The cutaway F-105D was incredibly well done, however, I got the most out of the airbrushing techniques...more realistic goals for me at this point I guess. All in all, I enjoyed the whole issue as always.

                        I echo Dick's comments on the 1/72 F4U article. It was pretty good, but it didn't explain why that particular kitbash fixed the accuracy errors the author was trying to fix.

                        The other thing that bugs me is not really the fault of the author, but the cockpit is still not very accurate. Corsairs didn't really have cockpit floors. Look at the cockpit images about halfway down this page to see what I mean:

                        To really make the cockpit accurate, the floor should be cut away and some "plumbing" added underneath the rudder foot guides. I wonder if there's a resin detail set for the Corsair cockpit that would accomplish this kind of upgrade.

                        I liked the cutaway, of course. Smile [:)]

                        I really liked the Patton article. It had a series of simple tips that really made the model look good. I like the scale too!

                        The only article that grabbed me was on the kitbashed F4U-4, as I'm nuts about Navy aircraft. However, after I read and re-read it, it relaxed its grip. With as much as I hoped for in that piece, I felt like it had been edited with a chainsaw. Not one word about why the author chose Italeri's F4U-7 over their F4U-4B as the parts donor. Worse, there was nothing about the purpose for all the surgery. What discrepancies was he fixing? I have these kits in my stash, but it isn't worth a side-by-side-by-side comparison to find out! Still, it would be good to know, as I hope to attempt something similar someday.

                        Hoping for something better next time.
