Too much Armour!!!!!
Posted by Ernie on Monday, November 21, 2005 9:38 AM
This is just an opinion, but I think there is still too many articles on Armour in each issue. Now I know you can't please everybody, and people are just never happy but would it be possible to do a small article with pictures on each catagory, ships, planes etc......each month? this way you are giving something to everybody well mostly everybody.  I love ships and it just seems like there is too much timein between articles on ships. Just alittle more please!!!!!!!

I agree. There is even less articles on Braille Scale armor too. And with Jeff Herne on staff now I think you'll see a few more ship articles now.

Well, I don't think I can agree with that, but one thing is for certain: there's never enough Godzilla in each issue of FSM. Gamera either, for that matter. And when's the last time you've seen an Ultraman build in the pages of FSM? Never, that's when!
Alas, the truly ignored genre in FSM is Japanese tokusatsu!

Luckily, I also love armor, aircraft, ships, and automobiles, so FSM is just fine for me...and I can read Hobby Japan for the tokusatsu stuff!

He he. Interesting....Sign - Dots [#dots]

I only build WWII aircraft - and only in 1/48 scale. I have found that there is something for me in every issue I've seen (that's not a lot though Whistling [:-^]). But, I read every article and look at all the pictures and I have found that a lot of the techniques used by armor and ship builders can be applied to what I build. Not critisizing anybody, just my opinion. I think FSM does an excellent job of keeping everybody interested.

I wish they had more aircraft though..Clown [:o)]

I'm sure David Voss has 'oodles' of lackeys or minions who will get right on this! If, but some strange reason, he doesn't have any 'oodles' then he'll get Jeff Herne to fix it!

Clearly you need better ventilation as prolonged exposure to the glue and paint has affected your thinking.

I knew that, I was only going with the oodles of minions and lackey joke. She was recently featured in a "Welcome to", along with Jeff Herne (and somebody else who's name I forget Blush [:I]).

Yes. I do read that stuff!

Back on topic, sort of...

The suggestion that each issue feature one article on each of the major sub topics in modeling is, on its face, a good one, but is likely not workable. Where would you find a group of modelers/authors who are guaranteed to be working on the "right" mix of articles for each issue?

If you take the long view, and read several issues over the course of a few years, you'll find a wealth of information on all sorts of topics. And anyway, as mentioned above, articles on armor may have some information you can use on your spacecraft or ship model.

Regards,

-Drew

IMO there is too much aircraft. Not enough armour.

As for ships, well, I dunno, personally I think there are just enough. It's a very niche genre, and even as such, we usually see a ship feature in every issue.

Hmmm.

I tend to agree with the fact that there is too much armour in FSM. But it would seem that I'm the only one here who'd like to see some cars (like WRC, F1, DTM, Nascar) every once in a while.

I know that they've got a mag of their own, but for a magazine that calls itself FSM, a bit more diversity in the subjects wouldn't hurt.

This minor gripe aside, it IS a very nice mag and a very interesting read. And, as pointed out in another reply, there's something to learn in every issue, because a lot of the techniques featured can be aplied on cars and so on.

Just my 2 €cents...

Axel.

I have already weighed in on this topic before (see the Forum heading "A Bias...." from October-ish), but I think it is laughable to suggest there is too much armor Laugh [(-D].  EVERY issue of FSM (and, as was the topic of the aforementioned forum, virtually every cover) has aircraft in it, at least one article.  Many have several.  Not every issue has an armor articles in it, and rarely is there an issue with multiple articles devoted to armor.  Of course, this is being written by a guy who primarily does armor, so for me, the more the better.  Still, I agree with the earlier posts that said there is something to be learned in every issue and the skills from one genre easily transfer to others.

Now, how about some more armor?!!! Wink [;)]

Yes, I agree. However, you've (FSM) done better getting more armor articles than in the past. Obviously counting the posts by the armor forum is second only to the aircraft forum, we are due our fill of heavy metal.

One place that airplanes totally dominate is the kit reviews. Way toooooo many. Armor kits are released frequently, but rarely get covered. Always a landslide of A/C reviews. How about some A/M reviews?

I feel for the ship guys, for I like them too. It would be nice to see a bit of balance with all areas of interest.

I've been a newsstand buyer of FSM since it's inception and recently became a subscriber; I have to say I haven't really noticed a bias toward one genre or anther (and this coming from an armor guy). It's my belief FSM publishes articles depending largely upon what sort of articles are submitted. Therefore, they'd probably publish more articles about cars if they got more submissions about cars. Or ships, or whatever.  Kalmbach publishes car model magazines, anyway. What I like about FSM is there is always something unique in every issue, and as it's been noted, there's always something to learn. I think Kalmbach is doing a great job, and I think they don't need to change a thing.

"Your letter is based on the supposition that as editors of Fine Scale Modeler we can control the content of the magazine by picking and choosing amoung articles and photos. In fact, we can't, and in a very real sense the magazine simply reflects what modelers around the world are building and buying. The ads are the proof in the pudding: While we won't run non-modeling ads, or ads that are in poor taste, otherwise, we exercise no control over the content of them. And the content, like the hobby itself, is overwhelmingly military.
The good news is that this is a hobby, and you can build models of anything you please."
