Yup, very happy now!
At first, I had the sneaking suspicion it was a clever prank perpetrated by a buddy of , from whom I received this computer. He is quite the merry japester!
As it turned out, something, somewhere deep within the bowels o the machine was switched off.
What is a "proxy server" anyway? In all the literature I've read about it here, it says it's normally not necessary to enable it.
But I turned it on, and here I am!

Thanks for all your help, guys.

To be honest, I have no idea why.

But the important thing is that it's working now. Smile [:)]

BTW, you'll notice that if you login at work and then login at home, you'll have to relogin at work. The authentication process (the login and validating who you are, etc.) ties the account to a single machine. If you login on another machine, the prior login is invalidated. It's done this way on purpose.

(Just trying to head off another question.)

Thanks for your reply, Mr. Hansen. I tried all your tips, but no go...

THEN, my Internet provider answered my Qs, and it turns out my "proxy server" was not on. I turned it on, and BAM! Here I am!

Still, the mystery is why the FSM and other Kalmbach addresses were the ONLY sites I couldn't access?

Anyway, thanks again for your time and help.

And the great website! I'm really enjoying it.

Dave may have to chime in here, but here's a few things you can check first: Make sure your browser is set to update pages you access "always" rather than "once per session." (Which drop-down this info is on depends on what version of IE or Netscape you're using. I'm running IE 5.1 for Mac here at work, and I get at it by accessing Preferences from the Edit drop-down.) Basically, you want pages to reload fresh every time you go to them.

You should also have cookies and the ability to run java script enabled on your browser.

Before you re-access the page, you might also want to delete all the temporary files in the cache. It probably doesn't make a bit of difference, but I always feel like I'm helping the system by tossing out the old dreck.....

And that is just about the sum total of my technical knowledge. If none of this helps, we'll have to bring in Dave. Good luck!

Site access problems!
Posted by J-Hulk on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 12:19 AM
Hi, folks!

Been using and loving this site for a coupla three months now, mostly from my office PC (breaktime only, of course! Fully sanctioned!) and have never had any problems accessing the site or logging on, etc. Everything's worked beautifully.

FINALLY, I got a computer and Internet at home (yeah, I know it's 2003!), but was stunned to find that I could not access the FSM site at all. I can access any other site in the entire cyber world (believe me, I tried!) with no problem at all, except for my fave, FSM.
That was the first day.
Day two, no problem! Logged right on, posted away, like always, without a hitch. So, I figured the site may have been down, for whatever reasons. But I could access, so I was happy!

Day three to the present (about a week): no access whatsoever!
Not even a 404 error message. Just a "page cannot be displayed" message (it's in Japanese, so I'm not sure of the exact English there). I also discovered the problem when I clicked on any Kalmbach publishing site address.

At first I thought it was a problem with my machine, but I've checked and re-checked all the settings, and I can access everything else under the sun, so I don't reckon it's that.

But, first click on the FSM address on my office PC, and BAM! Here I am, so what trickery might this be?
Has someone snuck into my home and blocked FSM and Kalmbach from my computer?
Has some merry japester or snickering gremlin plotted to keep me away?

So, what do ya'll think?

Sorry for the long, rambling post, but it sure is frustrating!
Help!
