Any hobby channels out there on cable or satellite?
Posted by kp80 on Thursday, October 19, 2006 1:05 PM
I was flipping through all 200 or so of my cable channels last night and couldn't find a thing to watch.  Then today I was looking at some "how to" videos on Testors web site, then thought about all the IPMS shows that I've missed but would love to be at, imagined how cool it would be to watch one of the model manufacters design and put a kit into production...and then I came up with the "Finescale Channel".  OK, we can throw in some RC and model railroading too, and just call it the "Hobby Channel!"

DIY network has something like at least used to it was on, on fri and sat but it was all about R/C stuff. It would be nice to have a program like for us modeler's show the beginning of a build to the end result with how to do weathering and decal tips and etc.

Many years ago I wrote a semi-comedy piece about 'PMN', the 'Plastic Modeling Network' for our club newsletter. I'll have to see if I can find it and post it here...

About 15 years ago, my local PBS station ran a series, "Adverntures in Scale Modeling" based on this book: http://www.redskybooks.net/cgi-bin/rsb455/022710.html. Contact your local affiliate, maybe they'll  run it if the tapes are still available. This was pretty basic stuff, but at least a bit interesting.

Most local cable companies have public access channels. You are required to take a small class in how to produce a show including camera work. If you have cable you could host your own show. I personally have Dish and have no access to any of these tools. If you do you could contact your local IPMS and ask for help with guest experts on how tos.

Last night on a NJ affiliate of channel 13 there was a show called "Tracks Ahead."  It was mostly model railroading but they had a feature on this company in Miami called SMART that builds model railroad layouts for wealthy clientele.  They said they rarely build anything under $100,000!!  Man, the work was unbelievable, and even though I'm not really into trains, it was good to see some modeling going on there.  Talk about a labor of love!  Anyway, that's the kind of programming I liked seeing.

Here in Japan a few months ago Cable TV Fuji 721 had some shows on a Sunday that had 3 or so modelers that would build a selected subject, and they would take you through all aspects of the build.. I particularly liked watching them (usually single men) sitting in their tiny little apartment with little ventilation airbrushing away with a big smile on their face.. Not something that the average guy would attempt, but hey.. Anyway, these guys had some serious skills. Just a shame they wont live very long...

I watched one of these videos just today, the 1/24 Tamiya Suburu Impreza. Serious modeler, but MAN that apartment was just a fog of fumes!!!!!!!!

You can search youtube.com for specific search terms and find an array of model building articles.

Waikong,

Just checked out Modelers Channel, very nice!  Hadn't seen it before, but looks like it was just established this year.  Great to hear the modelers talk about their subjects.  And of course, nice to see some great models.
