A Thank You Message to Cookie Sewell

Cookie;

Regarding your comment in last months issue about the dieing art of scratchbuilding and modeller skills in favour of drop in, add on aftermarket products.

It is not dead! I scratchbuilt a Terrapin Mk I amphibian (British/Canadian DUKW) and entered at the Scale Modellers Contest in Ajax, Ontario this past weekend. For my efforts I was awarded a Silver in the Scratchbuilt 1/35 scale category.

I have been out of modelling for a number of years while serving with the Canadian Army. After I fractured my spine and my subsequent release from the army I needed to find something to do in my spare time as I was no longer allowed to run (Long distance was my hobby, sick I know but it was fun) so back to modelling I came. I picked up my references and old kits I had in storage and started reading all the issues of FSM I had bought years ago and started from there.

So long story short. It paid off and I just wanted to say thanks and to let you and all here know that the original skills are not dead, just not as readily used as they should be.

Cheers;

Gregory

First off, congratulations on your recent Silver. The scratchbuilt category must be a very challenging one to enter, let alone show up in the top three spots. Well done!

Second, fractured your spine? OUCH!! My back is having sympathy pains just thinking about it. To overcome such a serious injury is remarkable! Again well done!

So long folks!

Thanks Bill;

Yes it has not been an easy transition from soldiering to civilian at times. I recently went to the Doctor as I began to lose the use and feeling in my left leg and foot. After a series of tests thus far they have determined a minor cause of this is arthritis forming on the lumbar spine which is compressing the sciatic nerve. At 37 years old I did not think arthritis would be a factor until well into my 70's. However, I can still walk and do most things under my own power so I am thankful. Thanks again for your praise.

Cheers;

Gregory

While it may be getting less common in some areas , it is still going strong in others. I know with emergency vehicles there is very little to offer with kits let alone aftermarket stuff to build with so there is a lot of scratch building that gets done. Just take a look through the gallery at scalefirehouse.com to see ample examples of scratch building. To me I enjoy scratch building more than useing a kit. I know then that no one else has a model like mine.

Exactly why I built mine. No one else had that I knew of so I bashed away and it worked out alright.

 Wow, what timing. I just scratchbuilt my first ship. I used M1, M60, M48, T59, T54/55, M113 armoured vehicles, an M151 jeep, a 1/700 Nimitz is the base, but the end result is more of a WWII type Destroyer or escort... I don't really know, obviously I am more of an armor guy, but I am getting back into ships more now, too. My first grade school models were WWII warships...
 Scratchbuilding is having new life breathed back into it. It just might take awhile for ones like me to get that skill level that others have now.

 Sorry Greg. No can do. I only have internet access at work ( firefighter ) so that also explains why it took so long for me to respond as well, lot's of days off! I would love to post some pics so everyone could have a good laugh and try to pick out all the different parts, but for now it won't work. Sorry.

That's too bad, it would have been a great look-see to pick out what parts are from what. Oh well when you can get it on here it will be something to see I'm sure

So that's what Firefighters do during their down time, surf the net looking at FSM...lol a few of my wife's friends spend their down time surfing the net looking for firefighters... quite funny.

Cheers;
