December cover story - more info, please
Posted by mfsob on Sunday, October 28, 2007 9:30 AM

The December cover story on superdetailing a 1/32 Fw-190D-9 was good, as far as it went ... good clear photos and a decent number of them. But, and this is something I have noticed more and more in the last year, how about more details and specifics about how things were done, to balance out and enhance the photos showing what was done? I can glean a certain amount of information from a photo, but saying a model was weathered with a mixture of watercolors and thinner, for example, leaves it up to me to figure out brands and mixing ratios; painting styrene to resemble wood is easier to do if you are given some info on how to do it.

Just a thought. Don't forget the "how."

I Agree, I didn't see any text except for the history part at the very beginning...

Hmmmm ... same shortcoming in the January issue too. Building a Better Betty Bomber was of interest to me because I too am solely a brush painter, and I like trying to do little things to make my models different or unique in some way. I would have loved to have read how he got the stressed-out look to the fuselage skin, but what I got was three small pictures and a few vague lines of text. At least this time there was some discussion about painting techniques, which was helpful.

Bottom line, though - Tell me how you did it, don't just show me.
