The troublesome Sci-fi forum
Posted by Rob Gronovius on Sunday, August 24, 2008 8:54 AM

Several years ago, I stopped posting/visiting the sci-fi forum here because of hostile members dragging their disagreements from other sites onto this one. For one of the smaller modeling communities on this site, there always seems to be some sort of conflict there. Check out the wonderfest thread.

Someone just joined so they could harass another member. Even though I started reposting there recently, I'm done with that forum.

I think I can explain some of it, having experianced alot of it.  Anime, specificly gundam, is where alot of people get started, it seems to evolve from gundam to scale for those with the tallent, its how I was.

When you have forums specificly for sci fi, you tend to get alot of the same questions asked thoulsands of times over, basic questions.  It gets people frustrated, and they take it out on others.  I have seen a few forums completly die out, and some on the verge of dieing because of this thing.  Also overzealous moderators seems to gravitate toward those forums.  I had an account deleted and my IP banned from a site because I called one of the members a Nazi (a 'Chat Nazi' in the way of sienfeld's 'Soup Nazi') because of him saying things about profanity and such in the chat for the forum, even though we all were adults there, and such.

::::::edit::::::

I just read and saw what you mean.  I posted a little reply, I know people like that, theres only one way to deal with them, and its to get rid of them.

You said to, so I did. Me a voyeur? Nah.

That was a particularily aweful dustup, but those always seem to die out pretty quickly, and the moderators definitely take action.

Rob your posts are always interesting reading to me because you are a man of few words, well chosen unlike some Whistling [:-^]

I'd say keep at it and doing the things you like. Trolls go away.

Rob,

 I admire and respect your behavior as I have become accustomed to it. I know precisely of what you speak and will offer a lil insight without 'trolling' myself, hopefully. The latest was ONE very disgruntled individual who has earned himself bannings at multiple forums and the latest was merely a new 'assumed name' to continue his own agenda. What drives this behavior, grudge and nonsense? Who knows and it's not for us to suffer through thus his latest banning and the removal of his posts by the staff of FSM. He comes in late night over weekends to "snipe" as much as he can before being detected and this wasn't even the first time. So, what might appear as alot of nastiness actually boils down to one individual.

 I hope I'm not out of line for explaining what I know from here and elsewhere but I do hope it helps you to understand some of it a bit better? In an attempt to "be fair" I have not mentioned any names. Sorry if this is in itself inappropriate.

Don
