Signature GIF limitations - Anyone???
Posted by Milairjunkie on Thursday, February 18, 2010 2:26 PM

Does anyone know the limitation to *.GIF files used in the signature line? If it makes any odd's, it will be animated.

Cheers.

yup.. same here.. I tried adding a 3rd badge to my Sig line and it says I've exceeded 512 characters.. I tried resizing... etc..etc.. no go.. tried setting up a slide show in Photobucket with small size slides, I can get it to load, but no animation...

anyone got ideas?..

If you notice...the banner ads for the vendors which are animated only cycle once then stop. When we designed the ad for Sprue Brothers we had to set it up that way...per FSM specs. They are trying to hold bandwidth so those on slower connection speeds can still enjoy the site.

Well I know of some "secret squirrel" options using my full-fledged Photoshop gear... I remember using a program called gifbuilder (?) years ago that did nothing but deal with animated gifs.

Did I muddy the waters any?!

What are you using for your badges? photobucket ?? or ?.. I changed my sizes on my 3 badges to the smallest and its still over the limit.. 2 works.. 3 no..

I don't know for sure, bu I'd bet this "512 characters" limit gets into effect when the FILE NAMES of the badges are too long. Maybe try to shorten their names to "1.gif" or so and check again? I'm curious if it would work. Have a nice day

Speaking of badges---whatever happened to the "229" Badge?

There it is - I was looking for the question in a different thread!! Partially done but I've been ambushed by (sigh) paying work outside of office hours - and that's the $ that pays for the modeling! Heading to in-laws over the weekend & trying to figure out how I can bring the computer with me to finish off the badge, much more enjoyable than what I'm in for!!!

You may be on to something there. I was thinking that "512" may be referring to the characters in the actual image code, but that really doesn't seem like enough characters to code anything.

(Want to see what I mean? Right-click any image you have on your PC, then select "open with notepad" if you have that option. All those images are a crazy collection of code bits! Just don't alter what you're looking at, you could corrupt that particular file.)

Hey Pawel  - I think you're right about the filenames. I just added two group build badges to my signature line. I can use them both if I remove my text info, or use one badge + my text info. I bet if I make one animated gif with both badges it would be fine. I suppose it keeps people from having ridiculously long signatures & wasting all sorts of page space with nothing but signatures.

Yup, animated gif can be hosted in Photobucket & displayed in a signature line. I should be able to add some text now with no problems. How I did it? Do you have Photoshop by any chance? If not you can use "gif builder", it's free download, I posted a link earlier in this thread.

You have some errant coding happening in your sig. A HTML / preceding the image and a ] after it. Otherwise it's working fine!

So long folks!

ahhh - just noticed that too. When I uploaded my photos this morning, the system (FIGHT THE SYSTEM!!) kept adding a second line of code surrounding my pictures, had never seen that before.
