How do you move your models?
Posted by gonavycv64 on Thursday, August 18, 2011 6:32 PM

It looks like I'm going to be moving next summer after my current school year is over.  It's going to be a cross country move so I know I have to be very careful moving.  I know that I should be able to wrap cars and armour in bubble wrap and it should be safe but most of my stuff is airplanes and ships.  I plan on using peanuts to try and keep my stuff from breaking.  I'm most worried about my masted ships even with peanuts it seems like it'll be hard to ship them, seems like the lines would still break.

So what have you guys done when you've had to pack your models and move?

Wrap them carefully in bubble wrap, then put them in an oversized box buried in lots of styrofoam peanuts.  Even though I carefully did that recently, I had some minor damage that I couldn't believe how it could have happened.

I have a very large old balsa stick and sheet model of an old Waco cabin biplane that I couldn't find a box big enough to hold.  The movers hired in a subcontractor to build a wooden crate for it that cost me about $125 but I couldn't bear to leave that 40 year old model behind.  It survived with no damage.

So, for a masted ship model, that may be your best option.  A good crater will build the crate and fasten the model down so it can't be bounced around inside.  But it will cost ya, unfortunately.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

Check out the current FSM, it has an article all about this.  Its geared for taking stuff to shows but its a good process for moving too

Oh man, I just realized which model is going to be the toughest to move, my 1/72 scale 4+ foot long submarine.  I may get rid of some of my more junked models but that one is definately one I'm going to take.  My 3 foot long wingspan of the "peacemaker" airplane will go to charity.
