Academy 1/600 Titanic
Posted by mdlbldr45 on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 12:59 PM

I am in the process of building the Academy 1/600th scale Titanic . I am having trouble finding the correct colors for the funnels and the deck . I would appreciate any help in recommending the correct colors and any information on the availability of 1/600th scale photo etched ship railings and chain for the anchor . Thank you

Funnels: White Star line funnels have been a subject of debate for YEARS. Sources will vary from a light peach/almond color to a dark brownish mustard color. Recently the WSL tender SS Nomadic was restored and supposedly the funnel color is a formula from Harland & Wolff records which shows it more on the yellow side. According to Walter Lord's description of the RMS Olympic funnels he states you could see a pronounced yellow in them.

It would appear you could mix it from flat yellow, white, and a buff color adjusting the ratio until the formula looks right.

More helpful color references. The decks on Titanic were yellow pine, there are several reccomendations in the second link down.

Railings: Toms Modelworks released a set of rails at the end of August 1:600 Scale Set No. 6010

The same manufacturer makes a deck bench set 6014, window frames 6013, and misc. details 6011

And here is a source for various scale anchor chain

See the discussion of White Star Buff for the funnels of the Titanic at the Titanic Research & Modeling Association's website

http://titanic-model.com/paint/#white star buff

It gives you several out of the bottle options as well as some mix options

Toms Modelworks sells a 1:600 scale PE designated 'Generic Merchant' ship which is actually for the Titanic.  They also sell a 1:570 set for the Titanic

I would like to thank you for your help . Do you have any suggestions on the correct color for the deck . I tried using Tamiya's deck tan , but it just doesn't look right.

After digging around in my massive reference collection and looking at stills from the JC film I'd suggest Radome Tan from testors possibly with a minute amount of yellow mixed in.
