Setting option for "unread" vs "all recent".

About half of my regular forums come up in the unread option, which is what I prefer. The other half come up in the "all recent" option. I have no idea how this happened, but I would like to change things so that all forums open in the "unread" format. I have found no way to do this, however. How do I do it- without clicking on unread each and every time I go to the forum?
