Selecting forum "read" mode?

I prefer to read each forum in the "unread" mode. It seems like the default is the "recent" mode which shows a lot of old messages. It used to be that once you changed the read mode for each forum, the system remembered, and the next time you went there, each forum opened in the mode you were in the previous session. This seems to no longer be the case. Is there any way to set the option permanently?
