A lot of the technical questions should be made into sticky posts
Posted by Rob Gronovius on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 2:16 PM

All these posts about how to do this or that in the forums have been asked and answered multiple times. If made into sticky posts, like FAQs, and then people would see the answers they are looking for before they post the question.

I agree, it's a good idea.

Though, many people will still post their ship or aircraft or auto or figure questions in the Forum Technical Assistance forum.  We'll never eliminate that, just reduce the number of occurrences.

But the sticky posts show up on top of the posts. If too many are at the top, it will be a job to scroll down to find new messages. I am continually bothered by the fact that the "mark as read" doesn't seem to do anything.  Even though I select the "unread" option, too many of the forums are flooded with posts, even the low traffic ones.

Yep, plus the newer members don't always think to sift thru all the detritus to find an answer. The way I see it, doesn't bother me if there's redundant stuff out there; it's a chance for people to connect with others and that's a positive IMHO.

A lot of times there is a question of which forum to put things in.  For instance, if you scratch build an aircraft, do you put it in the aircraft forum or the scratchbuilding forum?  Or, we get a lot of questions about paint or decals for an aircraft.  Should these be in the aircraft forum or the paint or decal forum?

I like the FSM forums just because they have so many forums, and as long as they do, there will always be the question of which forum do you put the post in.  One of the reasons I do not like some other forums is that there is a single forum and everything goes in there, and it is a traffic jam!

I agree too many sticky posts make the forum unreadable. We had that problem with group build threads that were made sticky in the individual subject forums. Three quarters of the first page of the armor forum used to be sticky topics.

What I mean is that for technical assistance, posting photographs appears to be the number one valid question for this forum. If you placed a "how to post photos" sticky topic here, it would reduce the amount of posts about how to post pictures.

Of course, for the visitors who insist on asking model related questions here, they would still do so.

Yes on the "how to post photos"!!!  Thats definitely something that gets asked a lot.  Having a sticky on that one would be a great idea!  Good call Rob.
