Delete A Post

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I think several years ago we could delete our own post(s) here on the FSM forums.  Then, when updates were made by the good folks at FSM, that ability was removed.  

As the Baron mentioned above, it definitely gives you a reason to think before you post.  Believe me, I've written a couple of posts that I thankfully ended up not sending.  Once something's out there, it's out there.  You might be able to go back and erase what you wrote but people still remember.

i guess i am wrong but i thought as long as no one replies you could delete  but once the 1st reply hits your stuck

The other thing to consider is that a lot of folks here draw down a quote to start their reply.

Outright deleting a post plays he77 with that, for which reason you cannot delete or even edit your own post once its been quoted.

I tend to agree with the Baron: I have had a few anger posts recently that I feel stupid abt.

True, or considering that we do have the ability to edit a previous post, there is nothing to stop one from doing what Greg suggested.  Going back and removing the text and leaving it blank.

Of course, if you can't delete your posts, then in some circumstances, it can make you think before you post something, which is a net positive.

    Yep, we all do.  Not a problem.

    Okay, but one can see how it could cause confilcts allowing people to delete and/or edit their past posts.  I think that it would probably be handy if as with other Internet Forums/Online Communities that when somene edits one of their "past" posts that there is both an annotatoin and date as to when the post was edited.

    Hopefully, everyone feels that way.  Like you I don't like it when I post incorrect info, and will admit when I've made a mistake.

Hmm. Learn something everyday.

I've probably been involved in maybe 10 or more online communities over the years and have moderated/administered a handful of those, none of which allowed deleting posts by regular members. That was the baseline of my experience for my reply.

I didn't mean to imply that something would go astray by allowing same.  I just meant nothing is unusual here by not allowing user deletions.

No, not for us regular users.

If I wanted to remove an entire post, I'd just edit the post, remove everything and replace it with something like "Removed by O.P." If an administrator happened to see it, it'd get deleted maybe.

It is very common for forums not to allow user-deleted posts, so nothing is astray here at FSM far as this user is concerned.
