Help me with my web site, quick question...
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 5:23 PM
Hello,
I am making a website on www.freewebs.com and I cannot seem to figure out how to put in pictures. I do as it says, but they come up as red x's.... Anyone know of a little better FREE web making program? Where is the best place to host pics for FREE? I know monty pics and imagestation, but monty pics only lasts you 30 days, and imagestation has too many restrictions on linking etc. Please help me!

I am having a similar problem trying to get my own site online. I have webspace from my ISP but need an easy web design program (with a good help section) to create my site.
Hope this thread generates a few replies.

I am not sure about the web page builder program that you are using but usually pictures don't show because:

1.) The link to the picture is not correctly written or spelled out;
2.) The pictures have not been not correctly uploaded to site such that even with the correct link, the pictures cannot be found.

I maintain a site at geocities.com. It offers 15MB free web hosting space but it does not allow cross linking. It has its own web page builder program but I prefer using the MS Frontpage. I know a lot of people hate MS Frontpage but I find it easy and flexible to use compared to the others I know of.

Dwight is exactly right. The link being misspelled or directed to a wrong directory is normally the reason an image won't load. Also keep in mind that some servers, especially Unix/Linux servers are case sensitive. If the image is named mypic.jpg on the server you cannot use MyPic.jpg or MYPIC.JPG in the tag or it will not find it.

I have my site at 50megs.com you get 50 megs of space and they have an online page builder. main thing with the pics is that you want to make sure you have the url for where they are located right in between the html tags. Most of the time when I had pic problems it was because a bit of other text got left in the tag. Another site to host some pics for posting is picturetrail.com only get to upload 36 pics for free though.
