"Kalmbach" faked email

I think I would have put this in the "Suggestions and Feedback" forum, but that's not quite right either. I think David Voss will be able to find this, though. You've given it an appropriate title.

I got one from Kalmbach, too.

Actually, I've been getting a lot of fake emails like that recently, from MSN, the FBI, the CIA, Hotmail, and other familiar or official-sounding sites.

A lot out there, if unsure, hit delete to be safe

You sure those are fake, or are the feds really on to you this time?

hope you guys don't mind but i  have put a link to this thread on me and my partners website at www.theritz.cjb.net in the news section. (well, the missus added it) i too got one from the CIA saying someone on our computer was accessing illegal sites and would i open the attached file and fill in the forms stating the sites i had been on, virus scanner didn't pick up anything on the e-mail but i didn't want to risk it with the attached file so i trashed it. still ended up with a trojan on my comp that norton antivirus killed off. have ran a full system diagnostic and virus, spyware scan. everything clean now, but for how long with these virus spreading morons about?????

Best thing to do is ignore them.  If it's not something you would expect to receive from us, then ignore it.

Emails from FineScale Modeler & Kalmbach Publishing

It's not difficult to send out emails with fake sender information, thereby making it appear as if a message was sent from the CIA, FBI, eBay, etc.  To make it worse, some of these emails look authentic and even link to authentic looking sites but are not what they appear to be.

I get these all the time. If I don't know who sent it to me, or if I feel it's a phishing attempt it likely goes in the trash without being opened. On the rare occasions that Kalmbach does send me email, I can tell which is which pretty easily. I get the FBI one at least once a week. Since I'm a Canadian I'm a bit out of their jurisdiction. I haven't seen a CIA one yet, and with the recent news about rendition, I guess I'm NOT out of their jurisdiction! LOL Guess I better get out my tin hat, and English to Romanian to English translation book!

David, what's the chances of having a separate forum for stuff like this. I know there is already Suggestion and Feedback, but that is strictly for forum and website issues. There is Community Assistance (AKA Forum Help) but that title doesn't seem to allow threads like "new Firefox available" or "Email Phishing tricks" though many of us post threads like that there. Can the name of that forum be changed to something broader than forum help? Maybe Technical Forum or GEEK ND AHX0R FR0UM?

Ah, did spellcheck add that list of words to your post?

Yes. I was going too fast for my own good and didn't click "Don't change anything" before posting. Now I can't get rid of the darn list!

By the way, I tried to delete the whole post, but apparently the time had run out. Can you change that? I think we should be able to delete a post up to 23 hours later...

I got rid of the list. 
 
I don't have a time limit set for editing/deleting posts.  What I think is happening is that it's not allowing you to delete your post because it's been directly replied to.

No I tried deleting it before it was replied to. Unless it considers edits as replies...? The odd thing is that I couldn't see the list in preview or edit mode. Did you notice how the list repeated with the word "edit" separating the lists? That's how many times I went into edit mode trying to sort it out for myself.

I'm trying it again, but this time I will start and stop the spell check.

It tints the background light blue, obviously to show that you have used spell check.

edit. Well, I didn't spell any words incorrectly. Good for me! Bad for the test... /edit
