Need help using the new forum ...
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, January 15, 2006 6:06 PM

I basically quit coming here when the forums changed because I didn't like it.

I've made at least 3 good-faith efforts to understand them, to no avail.

In the old system, I'd come in, click on "Show all since last visit" and I'd get all the messages since I was here, within their own forum. Note I want "last visit", not "active", not "unread"(I don't ever read 'em all) ...

Now I come in, try active, unread, etc, and all the messages are lumped together -- the forum id is lost.  I don't visit some forums & don't care if I never read 'em ...

I've played in the Options but that seems like the nuclear option.  I set "Since last visit", "Apply", "Remember" (after playing with them).  I do this in one forum & it wipes the slate clean for all the others.

I go away & come back 24 hours later.  Hit Aviation & get a days worth of messages.  Go down to Armor & it's empty - hah !!  Looks as if viewing Aviation then became last visit for Armor & etc ...

I am no closer to figuring this place out than I was when it changed over.  The FAQ are useless.

So after all that, how can I make this new forum operate like, or very close to, the old forum -- only see messages since my last visit, see them within the forum  ...

Thanks,

John

John,

I used to browse the old forums the same way you did (Posts Since Last Visit link). Here's what I did with the new forums.

First, I determined the time period between my visits. In my case, I decided on using 1 Day. Even if I happen to miss a day or two, my thoughts are that even if a thread was posted two or three days ago and no one replied to it, it's probably not worth my time anyway.

Second, I set up the forum filter in EVERY forum to only show posts made within the past 1 Day. I also tried the "Since Last Visit", but that filter is NOT working. Be sure to hit "Remember" and "Apply" when you make the changes in each forum and it works fine. This process took the better part of an hour to complete in all the forums and sub-forums, but I felt it was necessary.

Now, I only see posts made within the past 24 hours in every forum.

Hope this helps...

Robert:

Hi -- it's John Ratzenberger from IPMS, MAP & all that ...

Thanks for the info -- your comment on "Last Visit" not working sure explains why I had trouble with it ... also makes me feel better ...

I guess I'll go with what you suggest & learn to live with it.  Since I don't watch al the forums, it won't take long to set up ....  My question is -- did you do "Apply" & "Remember" in that order or "Remember" & "Apply" in that order  or does it matter ???

ARC also changed forum software but they have button that allows me to "mark forum as read & return to main forum list" and that was a suitable substitute ...

John: I knew who you were...I recognized Kermit Wink [;)]

I'm pretty sure it's "Remember" then "Apply", but it only takes testing in one forum to figure out which way works. Also, you can set up one forum (A/C for example) to only display 1 or 2 Days worth of posts - since you visit more often - while another (Ships for example) can be set up for a week or more. This way the forums you don't visit as often won't drop threads as quickly.

Actually, with the severe drop-off in posts since the software change, you could probably get away with setting 2 or 3 Days in most forums and you shouldn't be "overloaded" with threads. At least they're not all jumbled together and you don't see posts that are a month old with no replies.

Take care,

Robert Foster
