Another convert, my work here is almost done.

Sad thing is, Firefox is a pain to post links. You have to paste the URL in the editing window, highlight it, select the insert link icon (the links above), paste it into the URL window in the popup and then hit enter before the link is "live". With IE you don't have to do that.

On the other hand, having to log in each time is everybit as tiresome.

Do you remember when the update was? If so you can use System Restore to roll back to before that date. Only problem with that is anything you've installed will also go away. Data won't though, only programs.

Wierder still is ALL my computers (six!) are set to auto update and I just checked all of them and I can stay logged in on each computer. I don't use IE so maybe I just haven't noticed?

Before you do that though, download Firefox http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ and see if that works for you. I prefer it to IE.

Will that didn't work.  This is bugging me now  LOL.  I WILL NOT GIVE UP... I WILL DEFEAT YOU!

Nope, no software like that.  It started after Windows did an automatic update.  I came in one morning and a message said there was an automatic update and to reboot.  I did and it has not worked since then.  I have since turned off the automatic feature nad asked to be prompted before updating.  Is there a way to see what the update was and undo it?  This is getting WAY past my knowledge of PC workings.

Not that I know of. Do you have any cookie manager software? They might. I have no experience with such things, as cookies are benign, so I've never bothered.

This is a wierd problem!

Yeah it is.  I can obviously log in but when I close the window on the PC, I am logged out.  If I go to any other computer in the house and click the icon I have saved on the desktop... I am in the forum ready to rock and roll.  I have even gone through all the advanced setting etc., at least the ones I know how to find, and everything is the same.  It's not just FSM, there is a TV listing site that I now have to set to my cable company every time I look there... used to be it was always set to my company.

I will try deleting all the cookies and start again.  Is there a setting somewhere that automatically deletes cookies after a predetermined period of time?

Wierd! I log in from two computers on a regular basis, and occasionally a third with no problems. Something is not right with your computer.

Have you deleted all your cookies? Sometimes they get corrupted. The website will see you already have the "remember me" cookie, but it's not working. If you don't want to delete all your cookies, just look for ones called Finescale or Kalmbach and delete those ones.

Randie,

I know, but with IE7 you can paste directly into the post without going through the additional steps. I post enough links that it's a pain in the backside.

Hey, Bill. If you post a link using the link post icon at the top of your message screen. It will post just fine.

I use Firefox myself. It works mostly okay, though there are some issues with this website. You can't paste a web link in directly, and spell check doesn't work. This is a problem with the way the site is designed and not the browser, as this is the only site where I've had trouble.

I had never thought of staying logged in until recently.

I was using IE7 with no problems but my son said to use Mozilla/Firefox. So he downloaded it adn it works just fine, too.

Marc,

Two things to try.

First, upgrade to IE7, it's a vastly superior browser to IE6.

Second, make sure your privacy settings are set to medium or medium high (Tools > Internet Options > Privacy Tab > adjust slider as desired).

For some reason your computer isn't accepting the cookie that allows you to stay logged in.

I visit this site from 2 different computers during the day. Once in a blue moon I find myself having to re-log in, but normally I stayed logged in whenever I visit. That includes times I shut down the computer at night.

Right under where you put in your password will be a check box with "Remember Me", checking the box deposits a cookie that will remind the forum you are logged in.

How to STAY logged in?
Posted by wing_nut on Monday, July 23, 2007 1:06 PM

I need to help of the computer experts out there.  For the longest time all I had to do was click the icon on my desktop and it would take me straight to the forum and I was logged in all the time.  My name was in the upper right every time and I could just post at will. A few weeks ago PC did one of the automatic Windows updates and had to reboot itself afterwards.  Now I have to sign in every time I come here.  If I close my browser, IE 6, and come back to the site in just a few minutes I am still logged on but if I wait maybe a half hour I have been logged off.  What setting do I need to check... and fix... so I can just be logged in all the time like before?
