Ships Forum Issues
Posted by docidle on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 9:15 PM

A number of members, myself included, made the mistake of clicking on Gene1's thread that was a link. Since then we cannot see the Avatars on the left hand side of the screen and the Replies and Views columns on the right but only on the Ships Forum. All the other Forums are functioning correctly.. Can you help us out FSM?

Guys,

I clicked on Gene's old post too. In fact I "played" with it a bit.  I have not had any issues.   The fix for you may require a "reset" to your web browser.  Depending on the release level this reset may cause you to loose any saved login/passwords.

Let me know what you hear from FSM and if you are still having the problem. I think there is another Thread about this same issue elsewhere on the forums.

If you are using windows 7 or above and using IE  try downloading and using Mozilla/Firefox.  It is a tad faster for some sites like Photobucket. (Just kidding, leave PB out of it. )  The fresh browser should work fine. If not, you are in a deeper hole than I thought.

I am using Mozilla Firefox- great browser, but I have the trouble.  Don't know how to fix it without screwing up a lot of my browser actions.  Can't the FSM staff do a fix?  Do they ever monitor this section of the forums?

My thoughts regarding the issues on the FSM forum web page that some members are experiencing. (see the previous posts)

The best option is to contact FSM for further guidance. They may have run into this issue in the past and already have a simple fix.

I have submitted the following post as an alternative.

I am convinced it is a browser issue.  I will discuss the Firefox web browser in this post. This problem may be release level dependant since some members have the issue and others are fine.

First, My disclaimer.

No matter which steps we do there will be some login issues as login name and passwords may be deleted and have to be re-entered. Deleting browsing data will cause some other initial inconveniences too. One thing I have noticed is the eBay login/password is almost always deleted no matter what data we Clear.   Also, for those who can't Log-out of FSM, uncheck the  Keep Me Logged In box next time you log in.

Firefox's method to fix things:

Clear the cookies and cache
Firefox caches websites, which means it saves some files on your machine so that it doesn't have to re-download everything when you visit sites. If a website has updated their code, Firefox may still be using some of the old code along with some of the new, which can make a web page display incorrectly. To fix this, you need to clear the cookies and cache:
  1. Click the Library button |||\.  Click History and select Clear Recent History….
  2. In the Time Range to clear: drop-down, select Everything.
  3. Click the arrow next to Details to display the list of items that can be cleared.
  4. Select both Cookies and Cache.
  5. Click Clear Now.
Now that your cookies and cache are cleared, visit the website again to see if the problem is solved.

   ___________________________________________________________

My method.

I recommend we try things slowly. These steps are more likely to fix the Mozilla/Firefox browser without a total "overkill" like the CLEAR COOKIES and CACHE-EVERYTHING choice, and are more likely to fix issues than the   "Refresh" discussed at the bottom of this post.       The first step, get to OPTIONS.

Start Firefox.

Click on the three Horizontal lines (Open MENU) in the upper right corner of  Firefox.

Click on Options about 8 lines down.  A new TAB will open.

{Alternately if a menu Task bar is visible at the very top of your Firefox window (Menu line = File- Edit- History Bookmarks- Tools- Help)  you can get to the Options selection by clicking on Tools . Click on Tools, a small window will open and  the Options choice will be the 6th one down.}
[Note: To  get a Menu  task bar at the top of the Firefox window, right click on a top-most point and a small window will open. Left click on "menu".  A check mark will appear next to it and a menu list will appear on your Firefox window.]

Details:

1st make sure to have all your login and passwords.  If unsure then there is a  simple step to copy them down.
Click on Options  (as above).  A new Tab will open.
Click on Privacy and Security
Go to Forms and Passwords
Click on  Saved logins. (Right side)
When that screen comes up click on Saved Passwords
Copy down all your info as needed.

Now you can begin to clean-up Mozilla/Firefox.

Click on Options.

Click on Privacy and Security.

Go to Cookies and site data.

Click on Manage cookies and site data.

A new window opens called  manage cookies and site data.

Scroll down to www. finescale.com and click on it to highlight it.
We  will also choose finescale.com and  cs.finescale.com if they are there.  To chose these hold the CTRL key down and click on each of the other Fine Scale items.  All should be highlighted in blue. If no,t we can do each one separate.

Click on "Remove selected".

This deletes all Fine Scale references but does not clear all data.

Close and reopen Firefox.  Try FSM.  If issue remains continue below.

Go back to Cookies and site data.

Click/check the box on Cached Web Content  (it may already be "Checked")

Uncheck  Cookies and Site data box,
Click on Clear.  (We are only clearing Cached web content data)

Close and restart firefox. Try FSM.

If FSM web page issue continues,  go back to Cookies and Site Data and click on Clear data again.

Check  the cookies and site data box and click on clear .  This clears out all cookies and site (web page) data.

Again, restart Firefox and try FSM. If the Issue continues we can try the following:

REFRESH FIREFOX

I always recommend doing the "Refresh Firefox" once in a while as it speeds Firefox up. But it also deletes a lot of the "saved" browsing data.

To do this go to the upper right corner and click on the three horizontal lines to Open MENU.  Go down to the bottom of the new window and click on ? Help  .  On the new window that opens click on Troubleshooting Information.   On the next window Click on Refresh Firefox.  Note: This will  refresh firefox but does not clear everything. ie: currently it has not been deleting  my Login and Passwords except for eBay. It did delete my passwords on older versions of Firefox.

Retry Finescale and if there is still an issue then you can try Mozilla's help page.

Guys,

I see some folks still have issues.

I went on FSM facebook page and gave them an update and a link to this thread.

"Several Ships Forum members are having issues with the ships forum reply column. Please see     http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/feedback_help_and_testing/f/39/t/179204.aspx.

Can you alert the WebMaster and see what he recommends as a "fix"?

Thanks. Nino.

I just got back a reply:

"Yes absolutely. Thank you for letting us know."

I never really noticed, but I don't visit the Ship forum all that frequently.

I'm running Firefox 61.0.1 (just got the upgrade this morning) and I cleared the browser cache.  I do not see the Replies or Views columns in the list of topics.

Same thing in Chrome, v 67.0.3396.99.  In the Ships forum, the columns are hidden.

I'm running on Windows 10, too.

I cycled through all of the other forums, and it's only in the Ships forum.

Baron,

Don explained it on " How do we get it back" with some great screen shots.  I admit I did not fully understand the issue as I did not make use of the " Replies and Views Column".  It does appear Universal based on your report.  I updated Don with some details I noticed.  If FSM gets back to us, I bet they will have a fix.   It is NOT browser or OS dependant.

I would define the problem as follows:

When on a specific Forum such as Aircraft, Armor, Space, Ships, etc., to the right of every Topic there are listings for the number of Replies and Views.  This is a feature that shows how much activity there is on each topic.  The Replies and Views are missing on the Ships Forum.

When clicking on an individual Thread on the Ships forum the "Replies and Views" are there and look fine and this had me confused.

So it is the main Forum page for Ships that has this issue. The other Forums are not affected.

The issue occurs on Win 7 and 10 and Mac OS. It also occurs using Ie, Chrome and Firefox.  It is unlikely to be anything except a Bug in FSM Ships forum; possibly brought on when doing a "Fix" to a problem thread back on June 11th. Link: http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/7/t/179174.aspx

Note that the above link was started after a thread was started by mistake in Techniques forum using a Photo link from Google as the topic name,  That topic was requesed to be closed using the "Report Abuse" icon. before that topic/thread  was closed  members clicked on it and after that the Replies/Views on Ships dissapeared.

 Nino

Edit:  When I said main Forum Page I meant only that page.  As Steve5 pointed out, page 2 and on are okay.

There has been an update.  Page 1 of the Ships forum is back to normal. The issue of  the Missing Replies Column has moved to page 2.  It appears as more topics/threads have been added to the Ships Forum, the original topic that had a very long title Name  moved to Page 2 and the Replies Column issue seemingly moved with it. Due to its long length it probably forced the columns to move to the right of the page to where they could not be seen.  Until I saw Page 1 recover and Page 2 come down with the same issue I was unsure of this probability. It seems more certain now. We can ask FSM to remove the original thread or simply wait till the missing Replies Column issue moves to page 3 and beyond as more new topics are added.

That's precisely the problem-the title is too long for the page to handle and it's shifting the columns off the page.

Deleting that post is an immediate resolution.

A long-term solution would be for the developers who maintain the pages to modify the new thread editing page, to prevent anyone from doing this again.  The best design would be to prevent anyone from adding more than the maximum number of characters the field allows, with a counter on that field showing "x/y characters", that shows us how many characters we've entered, till we run out.  There's already a text label that tells us the max is 150 characters, but that doesn't prevent this scenario.

OK, I just did a further test of the 150-character limit, and it's got some holes in it.

In the Testing forum, I created a new thread.  I tried to enter more than 150 characters in the Subject, by entering "1234567890", and then copying and pasting that string 16 more times, which would be 170 characters.

I copied the contents of the subject line and pasted it into the body of my post, and counted the characters.  There were only 150, the limited for the Subject line.  So, it looked like the page did not allow entering more than 150 characters.

I save the posted, and noted another occurrence of this bug, in the Testing forum list page.  The title is still too long for the page to handle, pushing the other columns outside the list grid frame to the right.

In the list page, it looks like the Subject column shows 60 characters before the other columns get shifted to the right.

In the post itself, I can see more characters, but here, too, the page isn't rendered correctly.  I can't see the Edit/Reply buttons; they're probably shifted somewhere out of the frame, too.

It's rendered correctly now, because the latest topic in the list doesn't exceed the maximum.
