Anyone else having problems with Search?
Posted by pordoi on Friday, January 22, 2010 10:12 AM

I try to do a keyword search and all I get is the red line of death...  "Sorry, we were unable to find any results using your search term..."  This occurs even when I search for generic terms like "Tamiya" or some other common term that is present all over the board.  Then last night, I altered the search setting to search the entire site rather than a specific forum, and it worked!  Clicked on the first hit and went right to the article; then clicked back to access the search results again and got ;   "Sorry, we were unable to find any results using your search term..."   Couldn't get a search to work after that.  This morning, I can get any term to give a result.  Frustrating.  Bang Head

And ditto on the execution errors described in hkshooter's post below.

I think the better question is "Why are we still having problems with Search?"

Near as I can figure out is that the Search Function is for the website articles and not the forum..

No, it's for the forum, the default is Search Our Community (Entire Community). Once into a particular forum, you can then use the drop down to select where you would like to search. For instance, in this forum I can search Entire Community, Forum Feedback & Error Reporting or Feedback, Help and Testing.

Or, should I say could search if it wasn't broken!

The 'Search our Community' search is working for me.

Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom. " Charles Spurgeon

Yep.

Of all the new features that the website has this is the most frustrating as it seems to work only sporadically. If it all. I have even gone so far as to email Matt Usher directly, which I have never done before.

Will see if it does any good.

See ya

The "community search" function has been a "now it is on" and "now it is gone" thing regularly.

It does not seem to be a maintaniance issue. I don't know if FSM has any software warranty or maintaniance contract with the web site upgrade developer. I sure hope that Megan or Matt will let us know if the forum is being maintained or not.

It's still ka-blooey.  Enter a term; get zero results.  Click on more search options and click sort  by newest first and suddenly, the search works and the 1st page of results is shown.  But click next to go to page 2 and the red line of death re-appears.

To the Editors:  I can't state this strongly enough:  One of the main strengths of a discussion forum is that readers have ready access to the extensive archive of articles and comments that are accrued over time.  Why bother saving all of this information if there is not a viable search function to sort through it.  This really should be a priority fix.

Search function fixed

Guys,

The Forum search function should be working now. If it is not, or you start having problems again, please let me, Matt, or Megan know.

Thanks for hanging with us.

Cheers, Aaron

Aaron,

Thanks for working hard to correct this;  your efforts are truly appreciated.  But bottom line is that it isn't working for me yet.  When I saw your response, I tried a search and was encouraged that I got results and could access the pertinent pages and return to the origin via the "back" command.  But when I entered a different search term, I got the same zero "0" results response.  I exited the web page, deleted all cookies and logged in again.  Tried a search using a common term, and after setting preferences to shown all threads, and still got the "red line of death".

Right now, I don't know if the problem is specific to my computer or settings or if its a glitch overall.  I hope that you can resolve this problem quickly.  3 thumbs up for your effort; hang in there and I'm sure that the problems will get ironed out eventually.

Glad to hear it. Anyone else still having problems with the search function in the Forum?

I have problems with the search - basically, all search options (e.g. order by newest / oldest first, or entering a date range) are ignored. Completely ignored: whatever additional options I enter,I get always the same results.

I confess that I'm using Linux as my OS, but honestly, that shouldn't make a difference...

Anyone else encountering the same problems?
