Posting active (hot) links?
Posted by stikpusher on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 7:36 PM

I just made a post and in it was trying to post a link to another thread on here. I used good old copy and paste of the the address into the post under "use rich format", but no active link came out in the final post. Only a web address that must be copied and pasted into a browser in order to be opened. What gives? This used to work perfectly fine in the past? Did the tech's adjust something else to complicate this matter?Angry

There should be a literal "chain link" icon up on the toolbar somewhere stick. Use it. Just highlight what you want to be a hyperlink and click on it. You enter what text you want the link to display on the title line and the paste the actual link on the top line. One thing I try to do as its a bit annoying for me, is change the target dropdown box in the third line to open in a new tab/page.

I fixed the link for you, Stikpusher. Jester is right about the hyperlink button. I'm used to writing these things in HTML, so mine end up looking like a string of code anyway. I thought the copy and paste option worked, but is looks like it doesn't. I've pretty much forgotten how the old Forum software worked, so I can't tell you if just dropping a link into the text box worked or not. I'll talk to the techs.

OK, found that icon... looks like the complicated it some more... can someone tell me how that improves the experience here by having to click on things more than before to do the same thing?

Thank you for fixing that. I am a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. theory... and no I don't mean the band, although I am a fan of theirs.

But that "link" icon is not functioning on my desktop here as I type this. It is dead. I wont even go into the issues that I have with my tablet.

Stik,

PM me a detailed description of what's going on and I'll forward it to the boys downstairs. We need to hear this stuff so we can get it fixed. The hot link button works for me, so I want to figure out why yours isn't. Also, if you're having tablet issues, tell me. If it's a graphics thing, there may not be much we can do right now. If its something else, let's take a look at it and see if we can get it working for ya.

OK I will do that. I know half of the tablet issues are me, as I am not tech savvy... hence my love for K.I.S.S. Wink

It may depend on the browser you're using. If I recall correctly, cut and paste links work automatically in IE, but not in Firefox.

I have been using Google Chrome for a long time. No change with the browser.

I'm using Firefox and I don't even see the 'hyperlink chain' icon. I do it the brute force way. I insert the following (kept as a sticky on my computer):

[ url=  http://   INSERT/PASTE YOUR LINK HERE  ]and identifying text here

with all spaces deleted (only inserted to show what to type-spaces not permitted).

For example, using the above, this hot link will take you to the PAINTING AND AIRBRUSHING FORUM

Here's what I inserted (added some spaces to break the link:

[ url=  http:// cs.finescale.com/fsm/tools_techniques_and_reference_materials/f/18.aspx  ] PAINTING AND AIRBRUSHING FORUM

Check your user settings. Go to your user info box to the right of the page and click on "Community settings". On the page that opens, click on the "Advanced settings" tab and under "Site Options", make sure that your "Content Editor" drop-down has "Enhanced" selected, not "plain text".

Also note that the link (chain) icon is usually greyed out until you have a word or block of text selected.

Hi Phil,

Thanks, my error in not realizing the link I pasted had to be selected (highlighted) in order to activate the little chain icon. Just tried it in testing thread and it worked (deleted the post) but the hot link shows (and works) but not the text leading to the hot link - make sense? Yes, I did add a title in the pop-up menu when you select link then click on the chain icon.

OK all that was done.... no change needed there. "Enhanced" was already selected.
