Thread pics disappeared
Posted by Stage_Left on Sunday, April 29, 2018 11:18 AM

Hi guys,

I have a build thread going and have successfully posted progress pics, but I checked the thread earlier this month and all the pics were gone (broken link?). I use Postimage to host my pics, and nothing seems wrong there, but I looked at their FAQ and in there they state that 'the forum needs to have BBcode support enabled.' Have I missed something? Thanks for any help you can offer!

Postimage had a problem. They either got hacked or failed to pay their web host and got cut off. Since the latter happened to them once before, I suspect it happened again.

They are back up and story goes that our pics/links can be fixed by changing the domain from dot com to dot cc or some such nonsense.

You didn't ask for my opinion, but I'm done with them and done with the whole free 3rd party hosting thing. Having been bit twice now, I've learned that a couple of my friends here are exactly right when they have advised "you get what you pay for".

Thanks much for the help, guys. Greg, your info was definitely good as it helped me repair my thread. I do believe that Fotki will be getting my business in the near future.

On a similar note...how do you post pictures using Win 8.1 and Google photo.

I opened my picture in google, and then copied the link.  Using the "insert image" icon I paste the link. I tried posting with the constrain box unchecked and checked but all I get is an X.

If I need to uncheck the constrain box to show the picture, how do you figure out the dimensions.  If not what is going wrong here?

Dave, I'm happy that you found my info helpful and were able to fix your threads. Broken pic links are so frustrating.

Using Google pics for third party hosting is a strange process, but it works.

Open your pic in google photos.

Hit the share button and click 'get link'.

Hover over that link, right click and press 'Open link'. (Open link in new tab works better).

In the newly opened page, click on the pic yet again. Now the pic will appear on a black background.

Right click on the pic again, and press "copy image location".

Now your direct link is in your clipboard.

This sound convoluted but once you've done it a few times it takes seconds per picture.

I don't think Google is designed for 3rd party hosting. I had to dig a lot to find this procedure, and I worry that one day it will stop working which is why I still intent to get a paid 3rd party host.

Thanks Greg,

I don't think Google photo will work as I have been trying to do as you say, but I don't see the Copy Image Location coming up.

I also tried fotki and on a trial membership, but I am having the same issue.

I open my folder.

I hit Open link. it opens to a new page, but in Fotki if I hit the picture, it just changes to the next one in th album

If i click on share, I do not see the "copy image location" but I do see copy if I click on the picture....so I hit that.

I then come back to Finescale and hit the insert Image button where I paste the location that I copied from fotki.  Again I tried all possible combination of the constrain box checked, unchecked, checked with dimesions, checked without dimension,,,,all of which produce no picture in the thread.

On Fotki, when you click on "share", there should be a window with five options. The top one is "Image URL for use on other sites". Click on the content in the box and it should note "copied!". Then paste it into your post using the image link.

Stuart, sorry my steps for Google photos didn't work for you. Maybe it's a Windows 8 thing. I don't remember a lot about Windows 8, maybe it was Windows 10 where the catchphrase was "right click everywhere"?

I have fotki open to my album where there are three pictures that I have uploaded.

If I click on the first picture a new window opens with that picture alone.

At the top right there is a greyed out Share button.  If I click that, nothing happens.

If I use the other button on my mouse I get a submenu open that shows the folliowing options.

Open,

Copy Shortcut,

Email with Window Live,

Translate with Bing,

All Accelartors,

Inspect Elements,

Add to Favorites,

Properties.

Beside ther Share button, there are six buttons, If i hover over them with my mouse, the say

Favorite,

Add Comments,

A button that does not show what it does, but if I click it, it open to another window that looks like properties (in this there is a field that says Name in URL - I tried copying this but it does not post a picture in finescale).

Download, (clicking on this opens a new window with the image in full screen),

Add Note

Tag member.

None of these do what I want.

If i go to the picture, and use the other mouse button and click on it my options are

Open Link

Open Link in New Tab

Open Link in New Window

Save Target As

Print Target

Show Picture As

E-mail Picture

Print Picture

Go to my Picture

Set as Backgound

Copy

Copy Shortcut

Select All

View Source

Inspect Element

Add to Favorites

Properties.

None of these seem to be able to do what I want, and I don't see the Image URL for other sites...??

Again is there a difference if using Win 8.1 ? That is what I am using.

I know zero about fotki but just went there and it doesn't make sense that the share button is greyed out.

I am able to use the share button to get a link for the following pic, which I'm betting 50-50 is one of yours:

Edit, I decided not to post it becuase it is not my image to post, but it is a bottle of Testors pearl green paint and it posted just fine.

I'm thinking on why your share button is greyed out, but I don't think I'll figure it out.

The only thing I can think is that I am on a trial where I have not paid any money to Fotki yet.  I would sign up if I knew it would work,,,but if it worked for you, then it should work if I sign up and pay,,,,,I think.

Me, I wouldn't count on that. It should be working now. I'd hate to see you pay then still have trouble.

Certainly it is your call though.

Yeah, Postimage let its domain registration lapse, and it was bought by a third party and held for ransom.  Postimage registered a new domain, so, yes, the old link URLs may need to be updated.  Not nonsense, really, any more than a carburetor is, or a braking system, it simply is a technical detail.

I'm not sure we're all that safe if we pay for hosting, however.  Photobucket also offered paid subscriptions.  I had one, the basic account, forty-nine bucks annually.  That didn't protect me, when Photobucket decided to try to recoup advertising losses by eliminating all of their subscription types except the $499-a-year account.

If there is any certainty, it's that there is no certainty, and anything can happen.
