Error 504 Gateway timeout error is back with a vengeance
Posted by the Baron on Friday, August 9, 2024 8:32 AM

All this week, I've gotten error 504 Gateway timeout error when accessing the forum, in the login, or if I can get in, navigating around the forum.  The usual workaround of refreshing the page doesn't work all the time to get around this. Sometimes the page will reload after one try, other times it just keeps failing.  I know it's the host, not the forum, but it makes using the forum practically impossible.  I can understand that some members have just given up on using the forum anymore.

(this morning, I am able to get in, obviously, but with multiple page reloads)

Three months worth of such things--oh my.

FSM is not the only site being clobbered by the issues involved, it just appears to be the worst-hit, and with no signs of improvement, and 90 days is a hge long time in the internet world.

I can't imagine how many have bolted from FSM having become fed up with the delays Time Outs and the like.

And, the decrease in viewers will artificially modify bandwidth use, which will likely create a false correction effect.

I hope it gets better.  I'd hate to bail out on the memory of Prof John Tilley, the late Peter Pan, and any number of long-timers.

I couldn't help but notice that, during these past weeks with the 504 errors, the forum has had a sudden influx of "new members" posting in the Welcome section, and they never seem to continue the conversation with anybody who responds.  One of the guys on another forum thinks it might possibly be a bot infestation.  Definitely seems a little strange that, at a time when known, legitimate members are having so much trouble getting on here...yet the "new members" don't seem to be having such issues, nor do they mention having had issues in their first time posting here.  This was also about the same time the strange links have been appearing in quoted posts that weren't in the original.  I suppose it could be coincidence, but I seriously doubt that it is.  Hope they get a handle on it soon.

I've followed Steve (aka Bakster) over to Modeler's Social Club

It's not the same, but there are a lot of the same folk there.

Well, I can't take it anymore. I've moved on to another forum called Scale Model Addict. Unless somebody can convince me the problem has been addressed, I don't plan on returning. Good luck all!

Why can't I find the "Any" key on my keyboard?

OK, all this week, I was able to connect to the forum, but when I tried to log in, that failed with error 500.

I only got in now because I'm on a different machine, and on this one and in this browser, I haven't logged out or cleared the browser cache.

It really is problematic to use this forum anymore.

OK, since Sunday, I couldn't get connected at all, error 504 on every attempt, including reloading the page.  Today, I got connected successfully. But for how long? I'm almost afraid to exit the forum.

After more than a week of 504 errors connecting or 500 errors attempting to log in, I'm in this morning!  Whoo-hoo!

I spoke too soon, as far as accessing and logging in with a newly-cleared browser cache goes.  I tried to access the forum from work, on my work machine, with a newly-cleared Chrome cache.  Got to the index page and could navigate to various pages, but could not log in.  Error 500.

Well, it is what it is.
