Curious problem: FSM Website causes my computer to freeze!
Posted by J-Hulk on Friday, December 30, 2005 9:00 AM

I've discovered a very strange problem with the FSM site and my computer. I didn't want to mention it until I was sure that it was indeed FSM causing the problem, as my computer is old and full of nutty idiosyncrasies and finicky problems.

After much testing, I have come to the conclusion that, somehow, logging on to FSM will, after I close Internet Explorer, cause my computer to completely freeze up. Locked. Bam. Solid as ice.
The only way to fix it is to do a "hard" reboot (not sure if that's the proper term; I have to push that little button under the main power switch, which I suppose cuts the power, kind of like pulling the plug), as absolutely no combination of control/alt/delete or anything else will pull my machine out of its stupor.

This situation occurs ONLY after having visited FSM. I can go to countless other sites AFTER leaving FSM, but when I finally close IE, the computer freezes without fail.

If I do not visit FSM, I have no problems at all. I have tested this theory in a variety of combinations, but the result is very clear: visiting FSM means the machine will freeze, every single time.

Anybody else out there having this crazy problem? Ever heard of anything like it?

Mr. Voss? Anybody? Help!!!

Brian, obviously the soon to be patented anti-J-Hulk computer freezing cookie works!

Kidding! Clown [:o)]

Seriously though, it sounds as if your comp is choking on a cookie. Have you tried logging off FSM (logout is located just below the "Welcome, Brian" at the top right of every page) before closing IE?

And can I suggest Firefox (www.mozilla.com)? Fast, tabbed browsing, and much, much more secure than IE.

FYI the computer reset button cycles through a "soft" boot only. A "hard" boot requires power being cut off to the motherboard.

So long folks!

I have never heard of anything like that (at least that I can recall) in relation to our sites.  I know there are ways to crash a person's browser, but it's immediate and it's not something we purposely would do on our sites.  To have IE lock up after leaving the site and visiting other sites, that's really weird.

Have you experienced this when visiting just the homepage or an article, not the forums?  or doesn't it matter?  Would you mind trying something out?  I'd like you to visit one of our other sites and see if it happens.  Try any of the following: Astronomy.com, Bead&Button, Scale Auto, or Trains.com.

Another question, just how old is your PC?  What OS, version of IE, and how much RAM do you have?

Thanks, folks!

Dave, thanks for the off-line contact, to save me a reboot!
I tried the other sites, and the FSM homepage with some build review articles, closed IE, and survived it all without a reboot.

The problem after visiting the forums exists whether I am logged in or not.

Weeeeeiiiiirrrd!

So, what's the difference between a "control/alt/delete" reboot and a "little button under the power switch" reboot? The little button seems to cut all power to the computer, as the monitor switches itself off if I hold that button long enough.

Thanks again for all the help, guys!

The most aggravating thing is I have to reboot just to shut the computer down...sigh...Sad [:(]

I'll have to noodle on this.  Good thing is it's narrowed down to the forum.  The next thing to try is visiting the forum without posting.  This will narrow down which scripts I need to review.

Hi Brian,

I'm emailing to save you rebooting, again and again, as well as posting it!

ctrl-alt-delete is the same as the reset button. But, not all computers are created equally!

I have a switch to turn the computer on, and if I hold it in for more than 10 seconds will also turn off the computer. That prevents accidental power-off if something hits the button. I also have a reset button that forces a soft reboot. If I hold that button in longer it just reboots again and again.

Some computers (and I suspect yours as being one) have a power-on like the above and if you hold the reset button in long enough also doubles as a power-off button.

I have an older computer that the power-on button will turn itself off if you look at it funny! Many is the time I've reached to eject the CD and turned off the computer.Angry [:(!]

Looks like the experimenting so far has eliminated the cookie problem! Which may have been easier to fix...

My second guess is something in the scripts is causing your computer to use up all of it's processing and RAM and causing it to freeze. There are demons in these forums. I don't mind the look of them so much but it does have some "issues".

So long folks!

Thanks, David!
As I mentioned before, it happens whether I'm logged in or not, or whether I post or not.

Might it have something to do with the Japanese OS? Perhaps the FSM forums have some new cutting-edge technology that kills my system (that other sites do not yet have)?

Thanks to Bill, too! It will definitely take minds greater than mine to figure this out!

UPDATE:

In the last week or so, things seemed to have improved. Haven't actually had to reboot for four days now! I'm not doing anything differently, as far as I know...yeesh, computers!

Dave, if you've done anything on your end that has helped this problem, then,

THANKS!

To be honest, I'm not aware of any changes that would have helped.  Glad to hear it's improved though!

Well, thanks for your prompt attention to my perplexing dilemma, anyway!
Going on five days npw, no reboots! Keeping fingers crossed...
