Registration renewal?
Posted by jtilley on Thursday, March 9, 2006 11:45 PM

This afternoon I got an e-mail message from FSM advising me to renew my registration on finescale.com, so I wouldn't miss anything.  When I clicked on the "renew registration now" button, I was sent to a page that asked for my name, address, screen name, and password.  When I filled all that out, I was told that I couldn't register because somebody else was already using that screen name and/or password.

It's pretty clear that the guilty party is me - i.e., that the system was stopping me from, as it saw it, registering twice.  What, if anything, do I need to do about this?

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

You don't need to do anything.  I'll make sure it's taken care of.

Mr. Voss,

I just wanted to echo the above post. I too got a "re-register" email from the FSM forums within the last week. I found it odd that it redirected me to a page asking me to fill out my info for a brand new account. I didn't, but I couldn't help but wonder if this was some sort of 'phishing' scam. I just wondered why FSM would be asking for my account information again if I'm already a member.

I did renew my subscription to the paper magazine within the last month, so could that have something to do with it?

A note for future reference, if you do get an email about a registration renewal and you're already registered here since late 2005, then please forward a copy of the email to us (we mainly need the email address it was sent to) and/or use the unsubscribe link at the bottom to remove yourself from that list.

The reason why you're receiving these emails  is that when we switched registration systems, we setup a mailing list for registered members of the old forums to notify them of the change and remind them to re-register.  Unfortunately, if a member re-registers using a different email, we can't remove them from the list automatically.  We either have to do it manually (which is why we need the email address the notice was sent to) or the recipient has to use the unsubscribe link.

Phew...  sorry for the long explanation, but I wanted to provide something vs. nothing at all.
