Hello,
Like several threads I have read on this site I am coming back to modeling. The last completed model was decades ago when I was a kid. I just turned 50 and have rediscovered this wonderful hobby. 3 months ago I purchased Revell‘s kit 5850 F18E Super Hornet. It has been a challenge learning new skills like filling gaps, proper sanding, brush painting details, and decal placement with Micro Set and Sol. It has also been enormous fun.
I can’t begin to tell all the readers the dozens of helpful tips and techniques I have read on these forums. I‘m driving myself crazy absorbing all this information but I know it’s a vast subject and it’s all part of the learning process. As a newbie I’m using Tamiya spray cans for the Hornets exterior paint. I know an airbrush is the way to go and that will be purchased in the very near future (how long will it take to master?).
As the jet is almost complete Tamiya‘s ACM2 1/48 Zero or Tamiya’s Ferrari F1 Portuguese Grand Prix car are next. If anyone has built these kits and can share with me anything that will make it easier/more enjoyable please respond.
Cheers and Thanks,
PW

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” - John 3:16-17
Welcome! Remember - whatever feels best for you is best. I have an airbrush and I've used it hundreds of times but I'm also a big fan of Tamiya's spray cans. Whatever works!

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Welcome, PW - Nice to have you join us, as you said, so much to learn and you'll find lots of information from the talented builders that will be so helpful.
As to how long for mastering an airbrush??? I've been airbrushing for over 50 years, still learning new techniques from other members. I suggest you have a look at a website dedicated to airbrushing, "Don's airbrushing tips," a really excellent place to learn about the subject. I credit Don Wheeler as the major source of advancements I've made in ability and proficiency, while using and caring for an airbrush.
Best of luck while pursuing your renewed interest in this great hobby. Hope to see some of your work when you get around to posting.
Patrick

I keep hitting "escape", but I'm still here.
I have been really impressed with the results from Tamiya spray cans. Being winter here in the east and keeping them in the basement I submerge the bottom 3 inches or so in warm tap water. That warms the paint and it coats beautifully. 2 light misting coats and a heavier 3 one seems to be the way to work it.
I find it funny that my first kit back retails at $17. After paint, primer, putty, various sanding grits, brushes, masking tape, blah, blah, blah, I’m in like $300. I’t would be a total waste of money to not build more. I owe it to myself to continue.
ill post work as I get more comfortable
Thanks. I‘ll check it out. I didn’t know airbrushing has been around 50 years. I bet you are really good.

I too use the Tamiya and other Rattle can Paints. I have found warming them in warm water will help after a vugours shaking to disperse the paint and you'll have continued success. As to the kits, I have done and given away the Ferrari F-1 car. If you pay close attention to the instructions you'll have a car you can be proud of.
Airbrushes are great for a lot of stuff. I first started using them back in the seventies in my Auto Body shop on Vans. Well, actually the Hobby Style in fact, Is easy to use!
The bit about the airbrush is reassuring. I ordered the F1 car a few days ago and received it today! As a huge F1 fan I’m looking forward to that build. I picked that project because the paint scheme doesn’t appear complicated. Just Ferrari red a little black. Tamiya has a few 1/20 scale F1 cars. The more complicated liveries like the Benetton and Williams probably should wait until I’m more experienced. Is that the right assumption?
Sadly (fortunately) my wife is under the weather this evening and went to bed. There will be no dopey Valentines day going out dinner. I can get a modeling session in.
