New kid...
Posted by shrikes on Sunday, November 16, 2003 9:28 AM
Hello from the Philippines!
I'm a newbie here, but I've been modeling off and on for the last 19 years, unfortunately, I'm still not very good by FSM standards (I build almost strictly out of the box. It's only when if I'm feeling "rebellious" that I change the paint scheme). I'm hoping to get into conversions like the ones I see in the magazine. (I always wanted to do a YB-40, but FSM "beat me to it" Tongue [:P] ).

I like to model 1/72nd scale WWII bombers and multiengine aircraft of that period (hey, 1/72 fits well on my shelf and they're cheaper... and I'm saving up for a nice airbrush.). I'm currently attempting an Academy 1/72nd scale PBY-5 Catalina, and the lack of detail really gets to me. Once again, the .50 cal. machine guns are just tubes of plastic no different from the sprue. Does anyone know of an aftermarket part of .50 cal. Brownings that resemble the real thing? Even my favorite B-17 looks like it's been attacked by miniature plastic darts... Supplies are limited in the Philippines, so I suppose it would be better if I could buy it off the internet. I wish I had some models to show to you guys, but I'm real insecure about them as of now. Maybe if the Cat turns out alright. Big Smile [:D]

Maraming salamat po (Thanks very much)!

Hey! Thanks for the encouragement, guys... this is the first forum I've ever joined that didn't drench you with foul language for being a newbie. I can tell this is going to be a great forum! It's good to see some fellow Filipinos around! If I may ask, where do you guys get your modeling supplies? Maybe we can trade info on where to get materials, techniques, etc...! =>

Thanks for the help, Historyinscale... I did a search for "aircraft machine guns" in the aircraft forum, and I found the site... ABSOLUTLY AWESOME. It's too bad that they don't make them for 1/72nd scale. Do you guys think that the stock 1/72nd guns that come with the kit will survive drilling if I take a pin vise to the barrel? I suppose anything is possible... I mean, I saw the detail on Allan's 1/72nd scale armor! Great job, by the way!

Hello! Nice to meet someone new. It means new projects, ideas and question to ponder.
Heating a needle or pin or even thin wire and using it to melt the barrel bore open might be easier since the needle is small and requires less force(less chance the guns will break) and might even be a little faster. I'd keep water nearby to cool the gun periodical so it won't overheat and warp. Good luck, keep us posted and I'll be on the look out for anything better.

From one newbie to another, welcome. I've only been logged on for a couple of days and already I'm hooked even if its just looking at what people have to say.

Don't worry about about your standards; I do most my projects right out of the box; just enjoy what you do. Otherwise is not a hobby, its work.... Now is that deep or what? Laugh [(-D]
