Another new guy who is seeking help
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 8, 2003 11:56 PM

Gents: This is the first time I've ever posted on a forum or even joined a group. I've followed some of your discussions and it seems as if you are not only well informed but quite kind to the neophite. I am also renewing my connection to modeling and find it has evolved into a very new engrossing past time. I'm currently working on the Timaya 1/48 F4U and am employing the Aries detailing kits. One question I can't seem to find the answer to is, what are the colors of the oxygen tank and the CO2 tanks that are in the cockpit detail. Oxygen- Green ? CO2- Black? I would be thankful for any help. I hope I'm in the right place to be posting this question mkay

Greetings and welcome! Spent part of last evening digging throgh the library to find
the answer to your color question. Nothing is ever easy and your little quandry is a case in point. All of the F4U cockpit photos I can find have the seat installed. You can barely see the oxygen/co2 bottles. I have a black and white with the seat removed, but that is no help. Color reference guides suggest, with almost 100% certainty,
that the oxygen bottle (starboard side) was light green 503 (close fs 595a match fs 14187). If the co2 bottle was part of the fire supression system, it is possible that this was brown. This would have been consistent with the piping system color specs for the period. It appears that early models had the oxygen bottle installed to the right of the
pilots right foot. In later models, this area was taken up by a circuit breaker panel and the bottle moved to the starboard side of the seat. I hope this does not add more confusion to your quest.

Thanks for all the welcomes! I am very taken-a-back by all the quick and friendly salutations, thank you.
Snakedriver: Thanks for the information. The only thing I know, or think I know is the CO2 canisters were part of emergency procedures. In one picture I have it identifies the 2 cylinders as 1-CO2 overboard release valve and 2-CO2 bottles - emergency landing Gear and vapor dilution.
If this clicks a memory for someone. I would very much appreciate the info as to their colors. Snakedriver: The detailed cockpit that I have from Aires has the bottle behind the pilots seat
Thanks again

McKay,
I'm looking at Detail and Scale #55. It shows the bottles you are refering to plain as day in a black and white cockpit shot (XF4U -1)with the seat removed. Color photos don't give a hint of what color those @###%&*#@ things are, because, as you say, they are behind the seats. I'm pretty certain the O2 is green and not a lighter color based upon the darker hue of the bottles shown in the b/w photo. Red was used for fuel related fixtures (filler caps, fuel line color coded tapes, etc.)
while yellow was for oil ( that great big container forward of the fire wall).
No wonder the windscreen got fowled when the oil bucket got hit.
I'm still reviewing my soures and will send along anything I find. Heck,
by the time I get done ,I may as well build a "Corsair" too.

Snakedriver:
Thanks for the info. I appreciate your help and your expertise.
The black and white photo you have is probably the same one I have. I got it off the net from Zenoplex videos. It shows them but I get no clues as to what the color is.
Thanks again mkayApprove [^]
