Hello from NW Illinois!
Posted by Shadowman51 on Sunday, June 12, 2011 11:07 AM

I'm from a small town in northwestern Illinois and am retired. I am just getting back into military modeling (I'm also an O gauge modeler) after a hiatus of 30 years.

Back in the 1970's I knew all of the major kit makers, but now most of them are unfamiliar to me. I used to build all types of military models (armor, aircraft, ships, etc.), but my skills are pretty rusty these days.

Are there any kits that you folks could recommend for me to "warm-up" on?

Thanks!

Hello and welcome!  I've also recently returned to modeling after a long break.  I started up again with some of the 1:72 aircraft kits Airfix has recently put out (MiG-15, F-86, and Sea Harrier FRS1).   I was very happy with the amount of detail and how easy the kits went together.  They're pretty inexpensive too.  Regards,

Brian

Welcome Sign to the forums! Kit`s to warm up with,eh?  Well, the new Revell kits are excellent,IMO, and also are pretty inexpensive. They may need a little filler/sanding but are good kits overall. If you`re looking for an easy build then most Tamiya kits would work. Most fall together and are very detailed but can get expensive. So, I guess it`s up to you now...how much you want to spend. If you`re near a Michael`s or A.C. Moore craft stores, or a Hobby Lobby, you can get 40-50% off coupons . Michaels and AC Moore carry Revell kits...not sure about Hobby Lobby.

Good luck and post some pics of your work.

Welcome!
And welcome back to modeling Smile
My modeling experience isn't too big,as you will notice if you read some of my threads, but i have one kit i warmly recommend for plain "fun-building" or as you said warm-up,the tamiya panzerkampfwagen 3.
not many colours needed, neither much time to paint.it comes together real easy and the result is very nice! great amount of detail and it also has a die-cast chassi.

Greetz from sweden!

I forgot about the Tamiya armor models. I built lots of those "back in the day", as my son says.

Welcome to the forums! As far as kits you will be surprised at how much has changed since you last dabbled in the hobby. Tamiya, Dragon, and on and on for armor kits. Go to some sites like Sprue Brothers or Greatmodels for some decent deals on some of these kits. Also while visiting the forum go to the different areas of interest and people will be displaying some of their latest work so you can get an idea of what you'll be up against as far as building some of the newer kits.

Welcome aboard and back to the hobby.

As far as Armour models go, assuming you are thinking of 1/35, i would deffinatly suggest Tamiya kits.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Welcome Shadow

Yup,, you can't go wrong with an older Tamiya armor kit    (armor / ground kits can be very forgiving)

Enjoy the ride!
