New to modeling this past summer.
Posted by st_gorder on Sunday, January 25, 2004 12:09 PM
Hey all. I'm new to modeling. I like early WWII Japanese and American aircraft. I'm particularly interested in the planes that participated in Pearl Harbor and Midway from both sides. Scale 1:48 and maybe 1:72.
Looking forward to hearing from anyone about everything. One question--What colr is zinc chromate? I've seen it as mostly green and I've seen it as mostly yellow. Both by testors. Also, is there a blue zinc chromate?
Thanks
Steve Gorder

Welcome to FSM!
That sounds like a Q for the aircraft forum! Plenty of folks can help you out with Zinc Chromate Qs there. (A long-winded way of saying "I don't know!")

Welcome to FSM Steve. Unfortunately, being a track fanatic, I can't answer your question either. But I'm confident in the knowledge of the members in the A/C Forum.

Enjoy !!!!
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

Hi and welcome Steve

Zinc chromate is a bright yellow green used on aircraft. Japanese aircraft had a bluezinc color but I am not familiar with it. I agree with the other posters, the aircraft guys and gals can answer your questions...

Welcome to the forum Steve!!! The Zinc Chromate used on US airplane structures is mostly Green Chromate (there are a few that are yellow as well, so you'll have to research the aircraft model, you are trying to model) I work on the 1:1 airplanes, and have thought of taking home a couple of cans of the real stuff, though it really isn't that great of a primer in reality. Most of the older era planes, if you look at the spars and such, the (Green)zinc chromate is flaking off faster than you can paint it on. As for the Japanese colors, I have no idea, but they are doing a Pearl Harbor group build in the Aircraft Section. Hoped that helped.

Welcome to FSM, Steve. You may want ot check the A/C forum. Tons of aircraft stuff there.

Good luck.

As for the zinc chromate:

Zinc Chromate is a priming paint for metals used to protect the metal surface from elements that causes reaction leading to rust and to enhance the bond of the final paint coats. Nowadays, it is still used in the steel industry and usually comes in bright yellow and grey colors. Previously however, I read that it is in yellow greenish or bluish colors but I haven't see such colors yet.
