Kiwi newbie

Glad you signed up, you will find this site unique from the rest of the modeling sites online.

First off the magazine has been around sense the early 80's. Many have started yet FSM has stayed.

Thus the site is a extension of their magazine.

Secondly its a rather casual atmosphere. I browsed a few and find the others not to my liking.

Some threads are more in fun than serious modeling, you will see the difference soon enough.

Anyhow welcome back to the hobby of scale model building! Oi!

I saw the wizard in Christchruch...does that count?

The good folk of Christchurch would say it the only one that counts & lets be honest, they've needed a bit of wizardy the last 10 months or so, talk about shakey isles! You wouldn't recognise the centre of Christchurch now, its trashed. Were you with Deepfreeze, your avatar looks like it?

Woot, another kiwi, were taking over now. Living in chch isnt always fun atm.

And yes central chch is utterly goneburger. Our beautiful cathedral is in ruins (pretty much every church in town is ruined) And theres chain link fences 200m down the road from me. 50m in the other direction theres rubble.

Hi Mikey, no mate,just up the road in sunny Nelson, though it hasn't been so sunny the last few weeks, we're having a crappy winter, for us that is. I'd hate to think what its like for those in the eastern sunburbs with their trashed houses, silt all around etc. Must be just too horrible for words. Chch was a second home to me for many years when I was a bit younger & the images I've seen have been really upsetting. WE had a family holiday around the south in January & went into the square & had a wander about. So glad we did now, we'll never see it like that again.

Yeah its certainly upsetting. I like nelson, although its a bit sleepy for me. Were quite lucky in that standing in our driveway you wouldnt know anything had happened. But just down the road theres major major damage.

But seriously I am kinda new here too and I love the place... the natives are friendly and full of helpful advice and comments...

Hi Jafa, I was up your way weekend before last for the Walking with Dinos show at the vector. Took my three boys up there, super show but you can keep your traffic, though that might be just a boy from the provinces speaking, Avis "upgrading" us to an XR6 didn't help with my impression of the traffic I suspect. We spent Sunday doing Ak, managed about 10 mins in Modelair in Newmarket, only LMS I could find near to our routes, nice wee shop. I was happy to climb back on the Q300 & head home late on the Sunday, back to the Mainland.

Yeah I am glad I got to see Christchurch before the tragedy. Yes I was with Deep freeze several times. Best trips I ever took. I loved NZ and going down south.

Lucky so & so, I often have watched the Deep freeze planes go out & thought a trip on one would be a buzz, I'm not so into cold I would want to spend a season on the ice but would have loved to have had a look. Were you with the National Guard units that did it or their predecessors?

I definitely count myself as a very lucky so and so. I was with the ANG unit but active duty. I spent several seasons down there and it is one of if not the coolest things I have every done. Literally and figurative. Getting to go into Shackleton and Scott's huts was just too special, and getting to celebrate new years at the pole  was an event not to miss. If it is still standing, the Antarctic centre by the Christchurch airport gives you a good feel for what it is like down south.

The antarctic centre is one of our favourite stops in Christchurch, pricey but worth it, but heck, nothing could compare to your real life experiences. Memories to treasure.

I live over on the North Shore and have a LHS just up the road, but prefer to travel across to Modelair, they are the best in my opinion for plastic kits, and the staff are a good nix of scale modellers and R/C experts.

The traffic is a nightmare specially at the moment with the RWC prep, but I would rather spend time in our traffic than try and navigate Christchurch. I spent a couple of hours there a little while ago, and it was an eyeopener for this jafa...

Lol, takes a natural disaster to make chch traffic as bad as aucklands.

Only reason its hard to get around is because some streets are blocked half way down with no warning. its frustrating.
