Better Late than Never
Posted by M9130 on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 1:22 PM

After about 10 years I have finally decided to start on those model kits sitting on the top shelf of my closet!  I am currently working on a 1/570 scale Titanic model, I am now in the painting and assembly stage.  I am a mechanical engineering student and my interests include woodworking, mechanical objects, (steam engines, old shop equipment, and gatling guns are really cool), along with firearms from the first half of the 20th century.  I am also a woodwind musician.  I plan to focus on ships and aircraft from the early 1900's through WW2.  It seems hard to find airship/zepplin and WW1 ship models.  Historical research is one of the facets of the hobby I find very enjoyable.

Welcome Sign

Unfortunately, the only airship models I know of  in current production are the Revell Hindenburg and Lindberg Graf Zeppelin.

I'd like to see a revised Macon / Akron

Welcome.

I know this is a plastic model site, but I was wondering if you have ever tried your hand at wood ship building?

Wood ships is really what brought be back to modeling.  I am currently working on a wood schooner and picked up plastic models as something to do/complete while the wood ship is in process. Plastic models became my "quicker fix" so I can at least get the sence of finishing somthing!

Neither one is better, just different. I love my plastic models but I enjoy the challange of wood kits....kits being a very lose term.  You usually get a set of plans and a box of wood and go at it, but it really chalenges your enginnering skills, planning and fabrication skills.  There is nothing like planking your first hull!

The best part of wood kits, it you mess somthing up, just buy more wood!

In either case, welcome aboard and look foward to seeing your Titanic.

John

M9130: It seems hard to find airship/zepplin and WW1 ship models.

eBay (item #400230376680) has:

Revell 1/720 Airship LZ 129 Hindenburg model kit#4802 for $25.
Looks good enough that I’m tempted myself.

Howdy and welcome, those hard to find or not manufactured subjects may wind up getting you into scratch building some of your favorite subjects. There are a few people here that have lots of experience in modeling small or large items from scratch. Just ask a question in the forum that applies and someone may have an answer or at least a suggestion. Again welcome, Magoo

Thanks for the welcome and suggestions guys, I look forward to building more models and sharing in the forum.  BTW if any of you decide to build a Titanic in the future, I have found this site extraordinarily helpful:
