Ex-pat Brit getting back into the hobby
Posted by judorichard on Monday, August 22, 2011 1:51 AM

Hi. I'm an ex-pat Brit living in California getting back into model making.

The last time I made a plastic model was about 25 years ago! As a young lad back in the UK in the early '80's I used to make airfix models (as a lot of kids did back then). I remember my first model was the Bismark. My father and I made it one Christmas. After that I made the usual models, a Spitfire, a Lancaster bomber and a Churchill tank. In the late 80's I went on to a public school and that was the end of that! When you're a border at an all-boys school you put away the kids stuff and concentrate on your schoolwork and playing rugby!

Now, at age 37 I'm getting back into the hobby. I think it will be a nice form of stress relief and I'm looking forward to a fun, relaxing hobby!

Welcome back to the hobby and welcome to the forums! There are a lot of great people here, and a lot of great info as well. Beware the general silliness, though....and the Major Silliness, Feldmarschall Silliness, Captain Silliness, Lieutenant Silliness, etc.........

Ah, on the other side of the Grapevine from us in the L.A. area. If you ever venture down this way, we have a great IPMS chapter that meets on the 3rd Friday of every month and an AMPS Chapter that meets on the second Saturday of every month that you might enjoy visiting. There is another ex pat Brit here who is a member of both clubs who needs some back up when we razz him about his spelling or pronunciationWink

Welcome Sign  Any resemblance between reality and my private views is largely non-deterministic. The question of the existence of views in the absence of anyone to hold them is left as an exercise for the reader. We’re all barmy.

Barmy adj. barm·i·er, barm·i·est. 1. Full of barm; foamy 2. Eccentric; daft 3. FSM member

I'm with you! I probably joined up after you but my first model was the Bismarck, then the Tirpitz, PT 109, then a Flying Tiger. That was back in the early 80s. I got back in about 2001 and after a long break I'm at it again. Glad you found it too!
