Hello and a question
Posted by spbm2212 on Monday, September 19, 2011 4:13 PM

Hi All, I am looking to see if there are any metal model car kits anywhere any more.

I have always done plastic modeling and my father used to tese me that you needed real skill to build metal model cars. He passed away last year and I have just been thinking for the last few months that maybe I should see if he was right. However, I just can't find anything for metal models of any kind. all that seem to be available are pre-built; CMC Classic Model Cars, Masito, Mini Champs are all prebuilt.

Does anyone know of a company still making the metal cars as kits?

Thanks

Pocher, an Italian company, made four beautiful and highly complex multimedia car kits back about 1970.  They were 1/8 scale and mostly made of metal parts, went together with screw, nuts, and bolts, just like a real car.  They were very expensive, several hundreds of $ at the time.  You can see them on eBay occasionally, mostly half started by people who gave up on them.  I wouldn't buy one unless you find one with the factory seal unopened on the inner box.

Glad to have you along for the ride!

Wow, just read up on Pocher. I think the old man may have been right! Well I can't afford any of those right now so I guess Pocher will just have to be a wish for another day. I will keep looking for other kits but those Pocher's looked really neat. Thanks for the info.

Back in the early 70's, I happened to see a big load of Pocher kits, on sale at K-Mart for about $25 each!  I knew what they were, and grabbed one each of the models they had in stock, unfortunately the Rolls Royce was not there.  They sold out in less than a day, and I'll bet 90% of them were never finished, because people didn't know what they were getting into.

Yes, I did build all three of mine, the first two way back then, and I stashed the third, and finally built it last year.  Quite a challenge and not for the inexperienced.

I imagine someone at the K-Mart home office made a major mistake, pricing them like that!  Talk about a SCORE...
