Hey everybody!
I'm a 25 year old dude with a BA in history who spends his free time out with friends, listening to old school punk rock, taking girls out on dates, reenacting the War of 1812, watching hockey (Go Bruins!) or hiking around old battlefields. Even with all that stuff on my plate, I still have time to build models!
My grandfather got me into planes at a young age. He's a veteran of the USAAF, and during World War II he worked primarily on P-39 Airacobras. My folks started taking me to airshows at age 8, and by age 9 I could look at a picture of a warbird and tell you what it was.
Sure I built a few planes when I was 10 or 11. But of course, I played with them, and subsequently broke them. And when I got up into my teenage years I had no time for models because I was playing guitar in a band. But when I started at SUNY Brockport I needed a new hobby to keep me going insane from the intense classwork. So one day while my girlfriend at the time dragged me into a craft store to buy items for scrapbooking, I took a stroll down the model airplane aisle. I walked out of there with a Testors 1/72 scale SBD Dauntless. A great, fun kit for beginners, or guys like me just getting back into the hobby.
It's been about a year and a half since I built that SBD. I've added a Bf-109E-3, P-39N, I-16 Type 5, a TBD-1 to my collection thus far. And I'd have to say my skills are improving, with the help of FSM magazine of course . I've built primarily WWII era planes so far, but I have boxed kits in my basement from every genre...from an A-4 Skyhawk to a 1986 El Camino and even a dinosaur!
I'm still pretty new to the hobby though, and I dont have an airbrush or anything real fancy yet, just a Dremel tool and other inexpensive essential implements. Right now I'm working on my first big challenge - MPM's A-20B Havoc. I'll have some pictures up soon of my progress with this bird. Hope everybody out there has a good night, or day!
